I even asked my uncle, an industrial designer, about this type of lamp. To my surprise, he told me he had 3 of these style lamps that he bought 20 years ago and they all still worked. I was a bit skeptical since he bought them 20 years ago, and I would assume the quality nowadays probably suffered in comparison. A quick glance at some of these 1-star reviews exacerbated my fears. I don't like buying cheap stuff that breaks, and that's why it took me three weeks to come around. Then one night I was playing piano in the dark, and I was fed up. I took a gamble on this $40 lamp. It's a halogen lamp, so it runs hot, but I expected that. It looks great, and the counterbalance on my units works beautifully. The biggest negative is the way it's shipped-- as others have noted, the bulb comes loose in shipping. On the first one I bought, the bulb was completely loose. I reinstalled it, but it burned out within a few minutes of my turning the lamp on the first time. (I handled it properly, so as not to get oil on the bulb.) The second one arrived with the bulb half-loose, so it also needed to be reinstalled, but because it wasn't completely loose it didn't get bounced around on its way to me. Overall I'm quite happy with my purchases, and I'd definitely buy another one if I had a use for it. Could I place the base on a surface above my desk and move the lamp assembly down to where it is at a lower position than the base?** A: Nope. The range, that is to say, the lowest position, forms a 90* angle to the base such that the "arm" where the lamp head attaches is parallel to your tabletop. Therefore, it cannot go lower than the base. **Q: I have two of these lamps that came with the house we bought. Neither works, even after replaced bulbs. Is there a fuse I can check?** A: Great lamps. I'm on my third. They wear out after about 5 years. Bulb replacement usually does the trick. But sometimes receiving pins for bulb get bent or broken. That's when I break down and buy a new one. **Q: Does it have multiple brightness levels?** A: No, just the one level. **Q: What can I do when the bulb won't stay in place? Instructions only say to "gently place into fixture" but I can't get fix it anywhere.** A: First of all obtain a latex painter glove. It is essential to be able to hold the bulb, particularly without getting your skin oil on it.Then make sure its off, or you will burn yourself if and when you get it in correctly. You can, if needed, ever so gently bend the legs a little to be able to get the pins in the socket: Note, if ou bend too much you will break it. Now you just have to fuss with it until you get it in the 2 holes. This one looks beautiful, and was less than half the price. It puts out plenty of light, and I immediately put it in the office. The second lamp had a scratch on it. I though I might be able to get it off, so I proceeded to cut a felt pad out for the bottom. This lamp is going on top of my piano, and I wanted to make sure it wouldn't scratch. But I couldn't get the scratch off (I think it was glue, but nothing could get it off), so I did an online return. I ordered a replacement, and it came the next day! I got out my glue gun, put on the felt pad, and I am very pleased with how it looks on the piano. If you have a modern décor, I very much recommend this lamp. When our bedside lamps give out, I will be buying two more to replace those. If I bought this lamp locally, I would have gone back and returned it. They may or may not have had another.
