## Questions & Answers

**Q: Does this model need a neutral wire? and if yes what is an alternative that is the same size but doesn't need a neutral wire?**
A: First, you're not going to find a smart relay that doesn't require a neutral wire. It just doesn't work.

Second, there's a neutral wire involved in any wiring set-up, you just have to find it. In your case, if there's no neutral wire in the switch, then that means the wiring runs breaker-fixture-switch instead of breaker-switch-fixture. You can still use one of these relays, you just need to put it in the fixture junction box instead of the switch junction box. I had to do that in my office in my house, and it works just fine. Disconnecting and reconnecting a ceiling light fixture is a little more of a hassle than doing a wall switch, but it does work.

**Q: Is this switch UL Listed?**
A: They are now.

**Q: If connected to a traditional switch, how does the rocker work if you want to control manually?  Does either up or down turn on and off?**
A: Basically what it does is it’s a remote shut off switch. So if the switch is on when remotely shut off, you will have to turn off, then back on for manual use, and if off, you just flip it on then off, to turn it off

**Q: Is there a way to use this switch to convert my buried in the wall, not-smart, 2 wall switch, no neutral wire, 3-way light circuit to be "smart"? How?**
A: The switch has relays which can be controlled by MQTT plus they have an app and a public API you can communicate with if you have development skills.

It does say it support Alexa and Google home but I didn't use that functionality - but I assume it links to the above-mentioned API endpoints? The Shelly website is very comprehensive, and they have a good support team so it might be worth checking with them.

Otherwise, it's probably not what you're looking for. It's more a foundation for someone to build IoT devices on rather than a 'smart' switch like the kind of thing you'd find in Best Buy or a similar retail store aimed at regular consumers. It *will* switch 120v/220v loads though (check the amps and elec specs to be safe) so it could be suitable for your use case assuming the Smart Home integration can do what you need.

This is pretty simple to Install, and has great features. You can use it for anything.One con is it is not very easy to fit in the switch box. It's pretty small but if you have a lot of wires stuffed in there it is difficult.I love that the switch still works. I have it on an outdoor light, and the light turns on at dusk and off at 1 AM. That's the automatic part. The switch allows it to still be turned on or off. If it's off, taking the switch to On will turn it on. And then you can turn it back off, or, if you leave the switch On, it will turn off based on the programming.

This shelly 1PM (power monitoring) smart relay is a really fantastic device. It allows you to make a number of dumb devices smart, without having to spend a lot of money replacing switches etc...Even though this is not generally advertised, the Shelly relays can be modified (via the internet) to work perfectly with homekit...Some very smart person has been incredibly generous to not only develop the code, to flash these relays, so that they work with homekit. They have extended that generosity to uploaded instructions (and even a video) outlining exactly how to do that process...There are cheaper smart relays out there. However, I have used them and they have a high failure rate...I have quite a few Shelleys in my house, controlling; lights, fireplace, fans, heaters etc etc. I definitely recommend considering them if you want to go that step further into the smart home realm!

I have a couple of these. I watched a few YouTube video ls thinking that would be the easiest way to learn how to use this, but honestly, the diagrams on their site are more helpful.My setup is the shellys for use with siri. I tried this with homebridge. That worked for simple setups but it didn't work for my three way switch. Siri could turn the switch on but not off. So I flashed these with a homekit compatible firmware and they work flawlessly now.It was fairly straightforward. I can imagine lots of uses for these, but I won't be giving any to my non handy brother. He'd never get it to work. If you are comfortable tinkering with things it's a great product. If you want to just wire it in, scan a qr code and it all just works, then it's not the product for you.
