Also recommend as an emergency backup. *by H***A on Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2014* I do not have diabetes, but I purchased this item to monitor my blood sugar for weight loss/maintenance purposes. I had tried another meter, but because I am doing this voluntarily and thus not covered by insurance, I wanted to keep my costs to a minimum, so I continued to research other options once I got started. I was pleased with the very low cost of the strips for this glucose monitor, and after purchasing it and using it, I was ECSTATIC at the amazingly TINY amount of blood that is needed - just as advertised! My other monitor claimed that little blood was needed as well, but I wasted several strips trying to squeeze enough blood out of my fingers trying to use the other one - my fingers just don't want to give up the blood! But this one works with specks that are so tiny, you can hardly see any blood at all - wow - that is awesome! The process is so much less painful now that I don't have to squeeze my already tender finger to get some blood out of it. Bravo! I am very happy with this monitor and would recommend it to others.Not being a diabetic, of course, I can't speak to the accuracy of it, since I don't have experience with other high-end monitors, but other reviewers have commented on that and give it positive reviews. But I can say that my readings are very consistent and predictable (according to my eating/exercise habits), which I think speaks to the accuracy of it.I also discovered by accident that it makes a great emergency backup meter to have on hand if you have a family member or friend who is diabetic. My grandson is Type 1 and lives about 50 minutes away. They were visiting me a few months ago, and he was feeling low and had forgotten his meter at home. I was so happy to have my meter on hand for him to use! I switched out the Lancet needle, and he was able to confirm that he was, indeed, low and needed a quick sugar fix. My cheap little meter came to the rescue!It's inexpensive enough that I think it's great to have on hand for those types of emergencies, and maybe to even keep one in your purse (along with an abundant supply of Lancets) in case a family member or friend or even a stranger has an emergency episode and doesn't otherwise have the means to check their blood sugar. Of course, you would need to be mindful of the expiration date of the strips and replace them if they expire, but they're so cheap that I think it's worth it, especially since so many people are afflicted with diabetes, and emergencies do happen. Isn't it nice to be able to offer help when you can instead of feeling helpless? I also always carry a small tube of gel icing in my purse for the same reason, as I know that can be useful if someone is dangerously low and unconscious or unable to eat or swallow on their own. After a while, I started noticing that the cap on the needle holder was loose, and would sometimes come off right when I was doing a test. So, I replaced the needle holder with a new one from Amazon. It wasn't long before it started doing the same thing.Then, my girlfriend told me about this monitor, and she said that I would not have the same problem with the needle holder that I had with the old one. So, I got it, and it works great. It is easy to use, and as far as I can tell, it is accurate. I now have to pay for the needles and test strips, but it is worth it to have a system that works so well. I am just sorry I didn't get this sooner. All in all, I'm just frustrated about this purchase since I did not get what was advertised, can't check to see if monitor it is working properly and inaccurate testing numbers.
