You could let it dry out all of the way. You don't really need to "clean it" after dumping out the dead flies - just add new attractant. A bonus is that birds start hanging around and swoop down to catch the flies before they even enter the container. They are reusable and the least expensive "trap" of this style. You can buy refills of the mix to make the smelly attractant. I clean them up and bring them in for the Winter and they last for years. I really like these - I have used them for years and they work really well! **Q: Does it works for mosquitoes?** A: I’m not sure, but I don’t think so. I’ve never seen any mosquitoes inside. **Q: Are you suppose to mix this up, it does not say on package and the stuff is just sitting at the bottom of trap?** A: I just drop the clear film with the fly attractant to the bottom of the jar and add water to the line. The film dissolves and mixes with the water. The idea is to not have to touch it, due to the smell. You could carefully swirl the jar around to speed the mixing along. There can be a lot of flies around horses. These traps catch a LOT of flies. Don't know why they want it rated on scent. Yes they stink. If they didn't stink, they wouldn't catch flies. They are used outdoors not indoors, so I don't find it to be that much of a problem. Cleaning out the reusable ones and resetting them is gross, so if you don't have a strong stomach for that sort of thing, use the disposable ones and just throw them away. Both work equally well in catching flies. With the reusable ones, you do have to buy bait refills. I'm not sure what is in the bait, but it is not toxic. Early on, I had a disposable one fall as I didn't tie it up well. My dog discovered it first and tore it open and ate the bait. I called the vet, I looked on the Rescue! web site, it is harmless.
