Review: Very nice mobile unit works great... - Nice well built mobile unit with a very nice color display that is bright and clear. I find it easy to program repeaters manually and have programmed about 4 dozen repeaters so far. It has more memory channels than I need. The PX buttons are programmable. Although no fan, the heat sink is hefty and will get warm after a good bit of TX - I have had no overheat issues. The RX audio is good and clear, and I also receive good TX audio reports. It has 5, 15 and 25 watts. The mic feels good in the hand and is easy to use. It has adjustable key backlight and some programmable hot keys. The PTT feels solid. I have tested this as a base station - I already have units in my vehicle's (two Yaesu FT-7900R & Icom V8000) so have used this on an Arrow J-Pole, Diamond X-200, and even a mag mount with various mobile antennas at home. So having Yaesu & Icom mobile units I would be happy to use this unit for mobile or a base unit. After watching a few YT videos I just had to pull the trigger for one of these and so far, I feel this is a really nice transceiver at a very affordable price.
Review: Great little radio for the 2m or 10m bands. Good value. - This mobile radio is working great for me. I'm using it as my 2 meter base until for my Ham shack. I built a 2 meter ground plane antenna and purchased the Jesverty SPS-1330 power supply to power it. With that set-up, I've had several weeks now of successfull QSOs and interacting with a local NET via a repeater. The programming cable that comes with this radio WORKED PERFECTLY to program it. I used the CHIRP app to program this radio. There are a few reviews that mentioned they had to buy a different programming cable and couldn't use the CHIRP app, but if that was the case, those issues have been RESOLVED. My guess is that those problems were with version I of this radio. This is version II. So, I can verify the fact that these issues have been fixed. I'm very happy with the purchase. Fyi, this radio is voice only. You can't do CW with it. It's got both the 2 meter band and the 10 meter band. YOU NEED TO AT LEAST HAVE YOUR TECHNICIAN LICENSE TO TALK ON THIS RADIO. Otherwise, it's illegal for you to do that. You can easily listen to Weather reports that broadcast on the 2 meter band and I have been picking up police and fire frequencies too. (For monitoring only, of course).

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Can you program all the gmrs/frs freqs and murs as well?**
A: Yes, I did using CHIRP. I have the same channels programmed into this radio and my Baofeng HT. Just used the FRS to manage my daughter’s move into her new house.

**Q: It says that this radio has a mic speaker, in the manual, the mic pinout does not show the speaker pinout, where is the pinout for the speaker?**
A: This radio has the telephone snap in type plug for the mic. The location is on the left side of the faceplate under the on/off button.

**Q: New ham here (with a dumb question): what do i need besides this to get on the air? an antenna? fuses? noise blankers?**
A: The 778 is a basic 2m-70cm radio. You will have to have software to program the radio, RT Systems will have the software. You will also need a programming cable. Just request the programming cable when you order the software.
If you are putting it in your car, be careful not to put it anywhere it might interfere with your driving. Wire the power leads directly to the battery, under no circumstances wire it to the fuse panel or cigarette lighter.
If you're using it as a base, you will need a base antenna and coax. They're numerous types of antennas to choose from. The best way is to buy a dual band antenna. In this case a 2m/440 antenna. as far as the coax, I would use LMR400. The antenna and coax can be purchased at HRO in Anaheim or on Amazon.
As far as the fuse, it should have one as part of the wiring harness, if it doesn't, a lot of radios use the same type of harnesses. You might find it on Ebay or Amazon and HRO.

Good Luck

**Q: Can this be used for fire department use? Also, does it come with the software to program it do you have to buy it separately?**
A: I used Chirp to program mine, I do use it to scan the department I work for. As far as transmitting the FCC says it needs to be part 90 compliant, although when you check the FCC’s website for this model, it does have a waiver to transmit above 480. I would not recommend it due to how steep the fine can be, but to each there own.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Nice Value
*by R***N on August 30, 2022*

This radio is a good value. Manual programming is not terrible, but the AnyTone software can at times easier if you have a lot of channels to program. I would buy another one for a spare. Do be aware that there is a quirk with these new version of the radio. There are no channels programmed on the radio from the factory, like most radios. The quirk though on the model, is that you can not put it into Channel mode, until you have saved your first Channel. Now, here is the caveat. The memory mode can not be saved to out of the box, so you will have to use the software by AnyTone to save at least one channel. This is not documented anywhere I have found. So, if you get your AT-778UV and you turn it on and press the [V/M] button to change to channel mode, and it displays [ERROR], then you will have to download the software from AnyTone, setup at least one channel, and then write that to the radio. This will fix the memory issue, and you can setup channels manually going forward. Also, be sure if you purchase this radio, to get the one that already comes with the programming cable. It will save you time on trying to find a cable that works. de KO4ZFO
