Review: Awesome Cup Worth Ordering - At my mom's house there is an over-sized coffee mug I use for putting ice and various soft drinks in which is awesome because normal sized coffee mugs are RIDICULOUSLY small. I don't drink 8 nor 12 ounces of anything. I also didn't want a tall mug because they are harder to clean. The only unfortunate thing is that this was the only decent mug available on desertcart that matched my needs. At first I was settling for this mug because after I order it, I went to a local Safeway and found out they had a couple large mugs at their in-store Starbucks too for around the same price. When I finally received this mug i was SUPER impressed, and I am glad I ordered this rather than buying the ones at Starbucks. First off, it's really sturdy - could definitely survive normal clumsy handling such as accidental knocking into the sink. A 2 feet drop to the floor though, I'm not so sure. Secondly, because it's an over-sized mug, it's easier to clean the wide and spacious insides. It's wideness also makes it harder to knock over compared to tall glasses because it's more grounded. Third, it has more than one uses: you can use it to bake, you can microwave it, refrigerate it, and freeze it. I didn't buy it for these extra attributes, so my review may not be helpful to you in this area. Still, it's nice to know that if a situation came up where I needed to make French onion soup, I know I would be alright. Fourth, it comes with a cover. Now another review said that the lid was functionally crappy and he might be right. I'm immune to coffee so I don't drink it; and even if I did drink it, I don't like my coffee hot and without a lot of milk and sugar. My first impression is that it's a pretty well built lid, like tupperware. But is it durable and does its job well as a steam vent? I don't know and I don't care. I'm only excited about the lid because it stops dust from collecting inside the cup when I'm not using it!!! Fifth, it is reasonably priced, it is on desertcart, and you can get your shipping wavered if you put it with another order of $15. Sixth, the edges (rim) of the mug is splayed out like a trumpet which makes it more pleasant to drink from. I'm not so sure if it's just aesthetically pleasing to me as a personal preference or if it is universally liked as well. Seventh, it's not plastic. Plastic cups have the advantage of being more durable but they have this smell I don't like and they are just not as slick as a glass or porcelain/clay/stone mug. Furthermore, plastic cups are not as personal. The disadvantage of this mug is that the holding part of the mug may be too small for some hands. I have Asian hands so it's a perfect fit for me. Awesome $10 investment. [Edit 09-24-2010] Yesterday, I tried to bake a potato in the oven using this mug and it turned out only half cooked. The half towards the bottom of the cup had the texture of a water chestnut. The mug protected the bottom half of the potato from the direct heat of the element of my oven, and it didn't get hot enough to transfer the already dilute heat through the air to my potato. French onion soups are different because they are liquid and always in contact with the mug, since the potato isn't in full contact with the mug, the heat of the oven has to travel through that air space to the mug, and the heat of the mug has to travel through the air gap to the potato. So, probably not gonna bake potatoes with it again. Still a great product for what I bought it for. [/Edit]
Review: Excellent for soups, stews, oatmeal & storage - These CorningWare pop-ups work well for us especially in winter months when we make crock pot stews, soups etc. PROS: 1. versatile because you can store and heat food in these. They keep hot foods hot for an hour if not more. We use them for making oatmeal and cold cereal. 2. They are stackable. 3. Easy care because you can hand wash them or toss them in the dishwasher. 4. The handle allows you to heat food and hold the cup while you eat without hurting your hands CONS: 1. They are pricey. To get past the price we had to consider the overall function and use. After experimenting with some other brands we decided to order 4 to serve our purposes. Overall we highly recommend this product to people who especially enjoy food like hot soups. We recommend buying one and trying one. If you like them and they work for you order as many as you need.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: how water tight is the lid? If i have it in a cooler and it tips over will soup leak out?**
A: The lid is great. It doesn't leak around the edges or the vent hole near the middle. I pack my wife's lunches and include soups and stews and they can end up on their side during transport. No leaks. I hand wash the lid as my dishwasher uses very high temperatures which warp plastic lids. When the food is microwaved, it stays warm for a long time, as the ceramic heats up and stays warm through lunch. I've frozen foods in them and have no problem with freezing. I thaw them first before heating in a microwave.

**Q: where made**
A: I did a little investigating in response to your question. French White CorningWare is made in China (disappointing to learn). Ultimately, CorningWare is a brand of World Kitchen, LLC with corporate interests all over the world (Wall Street values?). World Kitchen employs approximately 2,300 people, and has major manufacturing and distribution operations in the United States, Canada, and Asia-Pacific regions. I dug a little further and learned that CorningWare has at least 3 lines, which include French White (made in China), Simply Lite (made in Corning, NY, USA) and Stovetop/Pyroceram (made in Bagneaux-Sur-Loing, France). For more information about French White® CorningWare by World Kitchen, LLC:Website: http://www.shopworldkitchen.com/corningware/ Email: https://www.worldkitchen.com/contactus Consumer Care Center: 1-800-999-3436 Representatives available 8am - 6pm Monday -Thursday and 8am - 5pm on Friday, ESTTHE ORIGINS OF CORNINGWARE® BAKEWARE (sources: Wikipedia and World Kitchens, LLC)*	CorningWare (also written "Corning Ware") was originally a brand name for a unique pyroceramic glass cookware resistant to thermal shock. It was first introduced in 1958 by Corning Glass Works. CorningWare is notable for the fact that it can be used directly on the stovetop.*	In 1953, Dr. S. Donald Stookey of the Corning Research and Development Division invented Pyroceram®, a white glass-ceramic material capable of withstanding a thermal shock (sudden temperature change) of up to 450 °C (840 °F). It evolved from materials originally developed for a U.S. ballistic missile program, and Stookey's research involved heat-resistant material designed to absorb huge temperature fluctuations in nose cones (the forwardmost section of a rocket, guided missile or aircraft).*	When introduced for home use in 1958, Pyroceram® was able to go directly from freezer to oven to table, while its modern designs added a touch of everyday elegance. Given the versatility in the kitchen, CorningWare brand engineers designed each piece with tight-fitting lids for storage, the requisite shapes, sizes and durability to serve as bakeware with fashionable designs for any kitchen.*	Eventually CorningWare brand changed its formula to a stoneware material. CorningWare stoneware is: -	Safe in microwave, convection and conventional ovens -	Safe for freezer and refrigerator use -	Easy to style around, from classic to contemporary, country to urban -	Non-porous so it won't absorb food odors and resists staining -	Easy to clean by hand or in the dishwasher -	Tried and true for years of service in the kitchenREINTRODUCTION OF CORNINGWARE AND PYROFLAM*	In 2009, the stovetop line of CorningWare was reintroduced by World Kitchens. The cookware is manufactured by Keraglass/Eurokera (a subsidiary of Corning also specialised in vitroceramics for cooktop panels and equipment for laboratories) in Bagneaux-Sur-Loing, France. This is the only factory in the world still manufacturing vitroceramics (aluminosilicate glass) for cookware. At the time it restarted the production of CorningWare, Keraglass/Eurokera was able to abandon the use of arsenic in the manufacture of their vitroceramics, thanks to the modern technology of their newly built oven.*	In Europe, it is ARC who sells equivalent cookware to CorningWare under the name Pyroflam with a slightly different design. Since 2009, Pyroflam has been manufactured in the same French factory as CorningWare.*	CorningWare is sold worldwide, and it is popular in Canada, United States, and Australia.ABOUT WORLD KITCHEN, LLC World Kitchen, LLC and its affiliates manufacture and market bakeware, dinnerware, kitchen and household tools, rangetop cookware and cutlery products sold under well-known and trusted brands including CorningWare®, Pyrex®, Corelle®, Revere®, EKCO®, Baker's Secret®, Magnalite®, Chicago Cutlery®, OLFA® and OLO®, Snapware®, Visions® as well as some products for other brands including Anchor Hocking, Calphalon, Cambridge, Charcoal Companion, CircleGlass, Contigo, Fit & Fresh, Grand Epicure, Hefty, ingredients, Lodge, Nordic Ware, OXO, PAO!, Pizzacraft, T-fal, Friendly Faces Melamine, Kitchen Kare and Tabletops Unlimited Denmark.

**Q: Does the lid loose integrity after multiple times in the freezer and dishwasher?**
A: We own 5 of the mugs and have used them since at least 2009. I never placed them in the freezer, but did use the mugs with lids in the microwave and washed them in the dishwasher. Over time, the inner rims of the lids have become brittle and have broken on all 5 lids . I contacted the parent company when I could not find replacements online and was told that lids could no longer be purchased separately.

**Q: My daughter wants to make French Onion Soup which requires the mug to go in the oven for the cheese to melt. Does that sound feasible?**
A: This mug is oven-safe, but the lid isn't. I don't see why it wouldn't work for making onion soup as long as it holds the amount you want.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Greatest Soup Mug Ever!
*by J***I on March 14, 2011*

Let's begin with the fact that it is Corningware which means it is well made. The 20 ounce size means it holds a complete can of Progresso soup - fantastic! The lid assures that the contents will not spill when transporting it and the vent allows you to cool it off. The handle means you can microwave it (the soup or other liquid) as hot as you want and you will not burn your hand taking it out of the microwave oven. It is a wonderful for home or the office. Be careful, because it will break if you drop it on a hard surface like concrete (That's what happened to me as I opened my car door while carrying it a plastic grocery bag. Mind you the mug didn't break, only the handle.) I still use the one with the broken handle at home where I can put a plate under the hot mug. I have a new one that I use at the office and another one at home. Whether you drink hot chocolate or eat soup, this is the perfect container for hot liquid fare and it works with chili too. You will be very happy with this product!
