I also didn't read the instructions - just opened the battery cover, inserted the two supplied batteries and closed it up. The display showed all the 8888888s I waited, then touched the top of the scale, nothing. There was a little padlock icon in the top left corner of the display, I tried all choices of pressing the buttons, holding them down, both, one then the other. No change accept pressing the On/Off button did just that. Opened the booklet of instructions - good sign! They're in English, and readable. Flipped the scale over and moved the Lock/Unlock switch to Unlock! Duh! Ok, got past that. It's a really simple to use scale and the first that I have had in my kitchen. I've been using measuring cups & spoons for everything I've been following the Great British Baking show and they measure in metric (still amazes me that Americans still use 'Imperial' measurements - think about it) The scale measures in lbs & ozs, Grams, Fl.oz. and Ml. My concern was 'does it allow addition and subtraction - ie. Can I put some flour into a bowl and then add more or remove some to get to the right weight? YES! Process is simple. Turn the scale on (press the button) Put bowl on the scale and press the zero button (it's also the on/off button) now the scale shows 0oz - Add some flour, it shows the amount, add some more and it updates the displayed amount, scoop out some flour from the bowl and the display correctly displays the new amount. Cool. The finish is very nice, it appears to be easy to clean (wipe down with damp cloth) and does not take up much counter top. It arrived on time and was well packed. Review: Very easy to use - Very easy to use; I love the zero setting so you can first calibrate for the container and then weigh the contents.
