I've had two of these printers and never had a problem with this. What I have run into is the software tends to be VERY conservation on telling how much ink you have. I've noted that HP only suggests that you have an extra cart. on hand when it first pops up the message. My usual response to this message is to continue to use the cart. until I start getting lines in the solid parts of the print out, color or B/W. Using this approach I usual get about three to four warnings before the ink actually runs out so changing the ink cart when you first see the warning will leave you with unused ink and you then will waste it. Also I noted that when you load your paper in the feed tray, if you load a small amount, then another small amount to fill up the feed tray, you may experience the printer pulling two or more sheets of paper when it feeds across the point where you layed the second stack down. Don't know why this happens, but I noted that by loading a single larger stack seems to solve this situation. I just brought another one of these printers and it's working OK at this point. On that cart. spring, I did note that it is possible put a cart in from the up down and catch the spring wrong. I found the best way is to slide the cart in from the front which has the effect of making the spring go the right against the side of the cart holder instead of being forced down which causes the spring to put pressure on the plastic tabs and can cause them to break thus forcing the spring out of place. To this point, I haven't experience this problem. My first HP-6940 lasted over three years of continious duty in an always on situation and if the network was up and running it never failed to print. It only failed when a cart. carriage guide broke off and I couldn't replace it. Overall, I like this printer but like any printer I've ever used it has quirks and once you find out what they are you can either work with them or decide it's got to many and buy another printer.Update: 8/30/2014: The first HP-6940 I brought in 2008 which crashed when the cart. transport guide strip broke, I managed to fix when the second HP-6940 I had ordered crashed due to user error. (Used the old power supply on the new printer instead of the one supplied in the box which I should have used as it was rated differently than the one the older models of the HP-6940s used which caused a print carriage burn out!) From this blown out printer, I recovered the print guide strip and installed it the older 2008 HP-6940 printer and it cranked up and worked like new. (This after I ordered another one from Amazon! So I had three. One blown out, one older repaired and up and running, and a brand new one box never opened!) The make a long story short, today the 2008 HP-6940 finally bit the dust. It's paper feeding mechanism brought and I couldn't fix it. So I got 6 years use out of this old 6940 and am well pleased. I just finished unboxing and setting up the new replacement HP-6940 printer I got back in 2010 when this one, that just broke down, didn't seem to be repairable. (I made sure to use the correct power supply this time and retired the old one with the old printer.) So, I finally got to use the replacement I ordered when I thought the older "first" 6940 was gone. 6 years out of one printer seems to me like a good bargain. (Especially since I paid $25.00 for it in the first place!) If this new one I just installed works as well as the old one, then I feel like this was a very good buy!! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0 out of 5 stars Great Little Workhorse *by L***Y on Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2010* For a very low price this is a Great Little Workhorse for everyday office (or personal) use! Currently, I have 4 printers (1 Epson Artisan 800 for photos & scanning; 2 HP LaserJet printers for B/W printing & this HP DeskJest 6940 Inkjet Color Printer). I chose this unit to replace an HP Printer we ran nearly 7 days a week for 5 years, and the space allocated for it was too small for most printers, but this one fit right in. The ink lasts a very long time as well. It also came with an ethernet cable so printing from the Mac it's connected to is quite fast. Of course you can still connect it with a USB cable if desired. I did not get the quick start up installation guide that was supposed to be in the box, but after years of installing printers, we all pretty much know what to do. I bought it through Amazon.com and as always when making a purchase from Amazon, it was a breeze to buy, shipping was very fast & it was exactly as featured. Overall, I would highly recommend this product to anyone. ### ⭐⭐⭐ 3.0 out of 5 stars Great product, but no longer supported by Hewlett-Packard *by G***S on Reviewed in the United States on February 14, 2024* After 10 or 15 years or so, my previous HP Deskjet 6940 Color Printer finally gave up the ghost. I liked it so much that I bought a replacement. During the installation process, it asked me to insert the CD that they supplied. My MacBook Pro does not have a CD slot. Fortunately, my son-in-law had a CD reader that could be plugged in. Nonetheless, my Mac couldn't use the driver. (I forget why, but that doesn't matter.) So I tried to download the driver from the internet, only to find that HP no longer supports this model. Still not defeated, I got my granddaughter (an MIT graduate and an ex-Google employee) to help. She managed to find the driver somewhere — she was working so fast that I couldn't follow what she was doing. Unfortunately, it didn't seem to work. Then she or I realized that the original driver was still on my computer and she was able to use it to replace the defunct printer with the new one. It works just as well as the old one did before it died. Bottom line: Don't buy this printer unless you are replacing a previous one of the same model AND still have the software/driver to install it.
