## Overview

The Icom IC-M88 Handheld VHF Marine Radio is a robust communication device designed for maritime professionals, featuring a powerful 5W output, automatic weather scanning, and instant access to emergency channels, ensuring safety and connectivity on the water.

## Description

desertcart.com Built tough to withstand the punishing marine environment, the Icom IC-M88 handheld VHF radio is a must for safety-minded boaters. The radio is outfitted with a host of valuable features, including an easy-to-read backlit LCD display, an intuitive six-button keypad, and a rugged waterproof housing that's submersible in 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes. More significantly, the radio works with all 57 U.S., 61 Canadian, and 57 international channels, along with 10 weather channels from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA). The VHF channels offer an ideal way to communicate with other boaters--whether exchanging information on a great fishing spot or sending out a distress signal--while the NOAA channels notify you when inclement weather is approaching. As a bonus, the radio also offers 22 free channels (from 146 to 174 MHz) reserved for land mobile (commercial) use, making this an ideal unit for marine professionals who also work on the shore (requires FCC license). The radio's layout is straightforward and easy to use, with a half dozen clearly labeled buttons on the front panel and a volume/power knob along the top. The radio's rugged body, meanwhile, meets military specifications for durability, so you can rough it up at sea or on land without fearing a breakdown. Other design details include 5 watts of output power for reliable communication over long distances, a surprisingly compact chassis that fits easily in the palm of your hand, and a two-step power saver that preserves battery life. The IC-M88 also offers several scanning modes, including an auto scan function that starts scanning whenever no signal is detected, a traditional scan mode that searches through all the tag channels in sequence, a priority scan mode that does the same but also monitors the distress channel (number 16), and a weather alert option that immediately switches the radio to the appropriate weather channel when a storm warning comes through. Users will also dig the Dual Watch and Tri-Watch functions. The former lets you communicate on a channel of your choice while also keeping an eye on channel 16, while the latter monitors two channels--channel 16 and another channel--while receiving a third channel. The pair of "watch" modes guarantee that you won't miss an important emergency call from a distressed boater while your attention is otherwise engaged. Additional features include a lithium-ion battery pack that delivers up to 15 hours of talk time per charge, instant access to channels 16 and 9, a key lock function, a four-level battery life indicator, a programmable beep sound, and a self-check function that monitors the internal temperature, connected battery voltage, and water intrusion. Bundled with such accessories as a drop-in charger, swivel belt clip, and hand strap, the IC-M88 radio measures 2.44 by 3.81 by 1.53 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a three-year warranty. What's in the Box IC-M88 radio, lithium-ion battery pack, drop-in charger, AC adapter, swivel belt clip, hand strap, antenna, user's manual. Product Description M88 handheld VHF, Mfg.# M88 01, waterproof-jis7, submersible, compact size. 5/3/1 Watt selectable transmit power, scan, dual/Tri watch, optional speaker-mic, 22 channels for land mobile. Includes Li-ion battery and charger.

Review: Seemed OK at first... - I only carry a radio for emergencies while sea kayaking. That is to say other then periodically testing it, it was never even used. A few years after purchase, it stopped working (yes a few years--past the guarantee for sure but there's no reason that an unused piece of electrical equipment shouldn't last for a decade under those conditions) Anyway I sent it in to see if it would be practical to have it repaired or just throw it away. They contacted me to say it would be around 100.00 (it's been a while, I don't remember the exact figures) and I said "no, too expensive, just throw it away". Then they said that it would cost 40.00 for the evaluation that they just did to determine what was wrong with it, but that the cost would be applied to the repair cost if I went ahead with the repair. So I told them to repair it (they said contacts in the unit needed cleaning). Anyway, I got the radio back from them and put it on my dresser until the next time I needed it---probably 6 months later. The unit didn't work. I put it on the Charger and the indicator light didn't come on. I guess I'll have to buy a new radio but it darn sure won't be from ICOM! Robert Warren
Review: great radios - I've got 2 of these radios now, both purchased from desertcart. They arrived about 3 days after I ordered, via free shipping. Packaging was very good, because you could tell they got banged around by UPS/USPS during shipping. I've used these radios countless times, and they have always been dependable and very durable. They've been dropped on the ground a couple of times, used in heavy rain, and even accidentally dunked once or twice. [Typical punishment you'd expect while communicating from the cabin to boats, boat to boat, etc.] We've even used them between vehicles during a couple trips and to stay in touch while fly fishing on the river. I've never encountered any battery or charge problems over the 2 years that I've had one. [Icom is a name I've grown to associate with quality over the years.] The ability to scan user selectable channels, as well as, emergency or calling channels is painless to set up. (Just read the owners manual, which is quite detailed and provides the info in several formats.) The weather alert monitor came in handy several times, when threatening weather approached while we were on the water. I usually have one continually scanning here at the house, just for the weather alerts that it provides. Although they don't get quite the same range as a full-sized marine radio mounted in a boat (and with large antennas), they do o.k. We've used them in place of full sized radios on a couple occasions, when water/lightening knocked a big radio out, while tied up to the dock overnight. Simply put, they've come in handy, and do provide a little extra convenience and safety. The new guys in our group can pick one up and use it without much difficulty, even though they've never used a portable radio before (everything was already set up for them).

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good little radio for around the yard.
*by C***E on March 17, 2017*

I work at a boat yard, and me my boss and all my co workers carry a handheld VHF. I bought this mostly for the size. I didn't want a big clunky radio hanging off my belt, and so far I like this radio. The only complaint I have so far is that the belt clip is attached to the battery. Some how the other day working around the yard I managed to inadvertently unlock the battery from the radio, and the radio fell on the ground. luckily it wasn't damaged or run over before I found it. I went to reach for the radio, and all that was on my belt was the battery. I have ended up putting some silicone rubber in behind the battery latch switch. if I have to get the battery off in the future the silicone can be picked out, but I can't afford to have the thing falling off again. also if you get this radio it comes with a battery save function turned on. Turn this off it will cause you to miss calls. I use it all day with the battery save feature off, and still have plenty left at the end of the day
