The jib must be counter balanced with weights to balance it. The weights don't come with the jib but can be purchased at a sports store. So depending on the weight of the camera being used will determine the amount of counter-weights needed. I generally use a Panasonic HG-HMC-40 video camera which weighs a little over 3 pounds with added microphone and battery. It works well with my smaller video camera as well. Video or still camera will work but you will need a way to operate the camera. **Q: does it always have to extend the full 8 feet or can you use it at 4 ft or some other length?** A: Make sure it comes in parts!! (very easy to put together yourself). Then you can get 4ft, 8ft, or 12ft depending on your needs. Note: You will need additional free weights to counterbalance the crane the longer you extend the crane. **Q: Is this product the crane itself or is it just the stand? I ordered a product thinking it was the crane but only got the stand.** A: I received everything, including the stand, to make the system work as you would expect. You should attach a weight to the arm, opposite the camera end, to balance the unit. I use an old milk jug with about one gallon of water. I am very happy with my unit. **Q: What size weights need to be used? How big does the diameter need to be on the weight itself for it to properly fit on the crane.** A: 1" diameter weights work just fine.
