Review: So impressed Hifi Enthusiast - So pleased with these. I previously spent over £200 on a KEF ceiling speaker. These outperform then significantly. Great bass, decent high frequencies. Impressed 100%. And yes, I love my equipment and this is the first time I’ve just dived in with a random value desertcart purchase like this. Excellent!
Review: I ordered two of these just to see since they are the same cutout dimension as KEF's ceiling speakers which I was originally going to get. I listened to the KEF's at a distributor and planned on getting the Q-series up front (bookshelves and center- not in-wall) and the KEF Q-series ceilings for side and rear surround duty in a 7.1 system, though $250-$300 per ceiling speaker just seemed high so I started looking around (desertcart, monoprice). I tried 2 of these out and am very pleased with the result. I had looked for Micca's reference series, but couldn't find them. I think the best thing about this little guy is the silk dome tweeter. It has a nice crispness to it after running my receiver's (Pioneer's 1120-K) room EQ program. The program did not greatly bump up or down the levels in the EQ band. They are clear and the installation was very easy (banana clips a plus). The mid-bass seems neutral too but really it is up to the sound mixer to fill these with sound. It seems just right and does the job for 1/10th the price as the more expensive models. I can't do a real comparison to other more expensive speakers but they seem very comparable. A pink noise test seemed pretty uniform and comparable to the Andrew Jones BS22's bookshelves and center I have as it went around the room. These might be a real good match together for a budget system. I do have these in backerboxes mind you that I installed prior to drywall and are sealed and stuffed with batting. There is not too much info coming from the surrounds channels normally but they can get loud enough in movies well (Saving Private Ryan, Gravity (amazing surround effects). It adds great ambiance to movies. You can aim the tweeter a little bit, but I couldn't really tell too much difference when pointed down or at the main listening position. I have a pretty reflective great room and 9 foot ceilings. Don't rely on these for bass, that is what a subwoofer is for. Ceilings have their inherent limitations, but I think they did just fine for my tastes that I ordered 2 more for those back surrounds. They are keepers

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Do you need a speaker box in the ceiling to mount these or do you just cut a hole in the drywall and install them?**
A: Its been a while since I installed mine but I do recall the instructions telling you to allow a moderate amount of space around the speaker; something like 1 foot by 1 foot. You do not specifically need a speaker box but your ceiling construction will affect the acoustics so if you find you have no bass, you may need some type of enclosure or baffle behind the speaker. I have four of these speakers installed in a 8 foot flat ceiling which has my attic space open to it and they sound great; one speaker mounting hole is secured to a 2x4 attic beam and the remaining mounting holes are secured to just the drywall. I left the fiberglass insulation in the attic so that it rested on the back of the speaker and again, the speakers sound really good. I also have a 10 inch subwoofer in the living area to handle the real low-end sound but these speakers provide a solid thump which sounds great.

**Q: Has anyone used them in a home theater, preferably in an Dolby Atmos setup?**
A: Using 4 of them in a 7.2.4 Atmos setup and they work perfectly, The tweeters are even adjustable so you can point them as I had to do since my ceiling is vaulted hip style. Everyone even the least technical people who never heard of atmos of dts-X walk away impressed.

**Q: \Which makes a better frontspeaker set up. 3 or these or 1 MTM with a 6.5 or 8 for left and right? How about these for rear speakers too. I like the idea of 5 identical speakers, but not if this isn't a suitable main (with a sub of course).**
A: I went with 8" for front right and two rears and the dual 5.25 for center. If I were to do it again I would have done two 8s for the center. The duals sound good but need a little more of the lower frequencies

**Q: Micca doesn't make towers with 8 inch drivers. I was thinking of buying these and building wooden towers using mdf or something. Bad idea ?**
A: If you are wanting a two way system with a single 8" and tweeter, it should work fine. I'd stay away from any kind of venting unless you have reliable Thiel-Small parameters, but I would definitely recommend stuffing the box with AcoustiStuff or similar. I don't recall if Micca published T-S numbers for the woofer, but since it's made to go in a wall, I presume it's designed for a fairly forgiving infinite baffle alignment. Good luck!
