    Excellent Nikon ML-L3 Replacement

First of all let me clear one thing; Nikon D5000 (one I have) has IR sensor on front side of the camera body. I believe that is the case with all other Nikon cameras. Thus if you buy the remote it will only work if you are facing front of the camera. It is not remote fault or camera's as matter that remote is not working if you are behind the camera. It is the way how IR works. With this in mind, I have to say this remote is awesome. I have created about 700 photos in last 3 weeks using the remote, and it worked every single time. Distance was from a foot to about 20 yards. Weather conditions where from 105F hot days, studio photography, to 55F moist/cloudy days on Pacific coast. I am very surprised how good this little gadget works. Would I buy it again. Yes for sure. However, I have to says, since this operates on CR2025 battery I have no illusion that this will be able to make another 700 photos with this batter, thus I have purchased extra (and would recomand this to you too). Finally for those people that want remote that would work regardless where the location of remote is vs camera position, look at some of the remote flash triggers that have option to be used as remote camera triggers. I have Youngnuo RF-602RX that I use as remote flash triger for of camera flash. This will let you controle the camera even if you are behind it (or in another room if you want) but it will aslo cost you more. However if you are looking for simple, cheap IR remote triger that will utilize cameras IR sensor (positioned at the front of the camera's body) for sake of taking self portraits, long exposure, landscape photography then look no father. This one does the job.

Works fine with Nikon 1 J1

*by R***P on Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2013*

I read a few of the negative reviews, and noticed a recurring theme - that the Amazon description says it's compatible but not the enclosed 1/2 piece of paper instructions. First - throw away that paper! That paper didn't say my J1 was compatible either, but it works fine. Go to your manual... This is another maker's version of the ML-L3 at a fraction of the price.First, make sure to set the shutter to fire with the remote. On mine, it's accessed under the self-timer function. I have 2 options, 1 looks kind of like a remote, and the other has that icon plus "2", meaning 2 second delay after I push the button.Next know where your remote sensor is on your camera. The J1 only has 1 on the front, the V1 has front and rear. I got lucky since I use a white photobox for taking pictures of my handmade pens, there is enough reflection to fire the camera by pointing at the box from behind. It also fired in the room the same way off of tan painted walls @ ~16 ft round trip. I suspect as the battery goes down, that may change. That's my next point, I wonder how many came with dead batteries as opposed to actual defective units. There's no visual way to check on the unit itself. I wish it would have a little red LED or something telling you it's active like most TV remotes do. That's what I took the 1 star off for. If it had that it would be perfect imho. You can point it at a video camera and push the button. Video camera pick up IR and you'll see it flash on the screen (that's how we checked remoted at RS way back when I was in college). You could always swap it out for a known good battery. It uses the same CR2025 that is in a lot of car remotes.

    Low price, works great.

You hear a lot of talk about the remote not working from the rear of the camera. After trying in many different angles from the rear of the camera I found that it doesn't work every time from a straight on angle from the rear. It does work at a lower angle pointing upward towards the bottom right side of the D5000 and sometimes it works from behind the camera by holding the remote button and making a circular motion.Bright light seems to affect the rear operation also.Needless to say I use a window mount on my vehicle and aim the remote at the bottom right side and it works every time. I'm sure everyone's experience will vary. You get a remote for 10 bucks that works...You can't beat that!I also assigned the FN button to control shutter settings, makes for a quick and easy switch with the thumb wheel while holding the FN button. The window mount and the remote makes a great combo for low light conditions with long shutter speeds for landscapes, sunsets, real estate, etc. Great little gadget, very happy with my purchase.
