## Description

Edited by H. L. Gold; ‘Galaxy Science Fiction’ hit the scene in 1950 and quickly became the leading science fiction magazine of its time. Galaxy gave a home to writers that didn't fit into Astounding and F&SF, and readers rejoiced. In this first ‘Galaxy Science Fiction Super Pack’ we bring you more than five hundred pages of fiction. These are the stories that helped Galaxy Magazine carve it's name on the Mount Rushmore of science fiction. The include: ‘Doorstep’ by Keith Laumer; ‘The Chasers’ by Daniel F. Galouye; ‘Blueblood’ by Jim Harmon; ‘Bad Memory’ by Patrick Fahy; ‘Beach Scene’ by Marshall King; ‘The Reluctant Heroes’ by Frank M. Robinson; ‘Kreativity for Kats’ by Fritz Leiber; ‘Perfect Answer’ by L. J. Stecher, Jr., Dumbwaiter’ by James Stamers; ‘The Ignoble Savages’ by Evelyn E. Smith; ‘Angel's Egg’ by Edgar Pangborn; ‘Survival Type’ by J.F. Bone; ‘Misbegotten Missionary’ by Isaac Asimov; ‘The Business; ‘as Usual’ by Jack Sharkey; ‘No Substitutions’ by Jim Harmon; ‘Prime Difference’ by Alan E. Nourse; ‘Delay in Transit’ by F. L. Wallace; ‘My Lady Greensleeves’ by Frederik Pohl; ‘A Little Journey’ by Ray Bradbury; ‘Med Ship Man’ by Murray Leinster; ‘Spoken for’ by William Morrison; ‘A Pail of Air’ by Fritz Leiber; ‘Contagion’ by Katherine MacLEAN; ‘Pen Pal’ by Milton Lesser; ‘Delayed Action’ by Charles Vincent De Vet; ‘... and it Comes out Here’ by Lester del Rey; and ‘The Old Die Rich’ by H. L. Gold.

Review: Intellectually-stimulating ideas - I have not finished reading this yet (it's long) but this is exactly what I had hoped it would be: An anthology of many good examples of Golden Age Science Fiction stories. In those days, Science Fiction stories were based on a unique new idea (new at the time at least), fictionalized in such a way as to make some kind of actual point. Specifically, these stories are the kind that appeared in the periodical _Galaxy_, which often featured sociological Science Fiction, sometimes satrical or ironic comments on various aspects of the human condition, often with a twist ending. The writing style tends to be journalistic transparent, heavy on dialogue. There were written during the mid-20th century when the typical reader was expected to have an exposure to classical Western literature, so don't be thrown by finding allusions to Greek, Norse, or Christian myths that a reader in those days would be assumed to understand without running to Google. However, don't read this if you want dense descriptive prose that would get a student an A in a Creative Writing MBA program. I did notice some instances of characters smoking tobacco, and one story had a high concept employing an adolescent heteronormative fantasy of females as childlike plaything sex objects as a metaphor to make a comment about goals and motivation. For the most part, these stories avoid overt sexist or racist mid-20th century biases. In fact, one of the stories so far is an anti-racist allegory about racism and socioeconomic disadvantage. This anthology is exactly why I read Golden Age Science Fiction: Stories with intellectually-stimulating idea content. I plan to finish reading this and then move on to the _Galaxy_ super pack 2 by the same publisher.
Review: . - This is what good sci-fi looks like, professional writing, solid plot lines, and imagination. Worth the time and money. Two thumbs up.
