I buy these frequently and have different quality guns for different purposes; still all HF **Q: Which waydo filters go** A: round ball up **Q: What is the outside diameter of the filter?** A: They are soft plastic, but the best measurement of an unused filter is 0.44" or about 11.3 mm. I use these in the only HVLP, gravity-feed sprayers that I have, which are all HF. As you are probably aware, there is no consistency between sprayers (other than their color), which is probably due to different manufacturers. You need to check the height of the filters (almost an inch at 0.94", not counting the stem), not just the diameters. They need to be snug when the cup is screwed into the sprayer, not crushed. You can test that by seeing if you can wiggle it from the stem. If the filter is too tight, it will twist. If it's too loose, it won't filter. The base of the filter can be sanded down by almost 3 mm. If the filter is too wide, make sure the sleeve where it inserts is clear if any old spraying material. Removal of the metal filter sleeve, if needed, requires an 8 mm allen wrench (and a good vice to hold it the first time). On some of my HF sprayers, I have had to narrow the diameter of the filter bases slightly. You can use a sanding disc or even an emery board for that, just don't overdo it! I have been successful doing that for all 6 of my sprayers. What makes these "disposable" is their price. But I don't throw them away. They last me for a very long time. I have a sprayer designated for each unique product: enamel, shellac, acrylic (water-based polyurethane), oil-based polyurethane and lacquer. They each have their unique cleaning requirements, so you may need water, DNA, mineral spirits or lacquer thinner, depending. Clean the sprayer with the filter in it, then clean the filter separately. Place it back in the sprayer and blow out any residual liquid.
