A Masterpiece
This DAP is ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!!!I’ve been a dap user for a few years -- everything from an Ibasso DX50 to an Astell & Kern Kann and a Sony NW-WM1A. And my three current iems are Noble Kaiser 10, Campfire Atlas and Jerry Harvey (JH Audio) Roxanne II with the Moon Audio Black Dragon cable. I’ve only had the Dethonray for a few days, but I’ve already logged many, many hours listening to it (I just don’t want to put it down).I was a bit surprised that the Campfire wasn’t a good match for the Dethonray. Its V-shaped signature had great bass (it’s basshead favorite) but the midrange and treble were decidedly on the thin side. The Noble worked very well indeed, but with the JH the skies opened up onto a crystal clear day. A slight layer of haze was lifted from the other iems and everything snapped into focus. Fully fleshed-out midrange, superb imaging and amazing detail without a hint of glare or sibilance. And the bass was powerful and actually better than the Campfire. Don’t get me wrong, the Astell & Kern and Sony are excellent players, but the Dethonray just does EVERYTHING better. But what’s mentioned but not extensively commented on in the reviews is its phenomenal dynamics. Reviewers generally don’t pay much attention to dynamics, but It’s dynamics that makes music come ALIVE, and the Dethonray beats the other daps hands down. Snare drums SNAP, kick drums KICK, and microdynamics on strings and vocals are terrific.I have over 1,500 CDs and exactly three hi-res albums, but fully expect that in the very near future a significant chunk of my bank account will wind up over at HDTracks. And as good as this dap sounds with my Roxanne IIs, I suspect that the guy who wrote the review who has the Audeze LCD i4s is in seventh heaven.Just one suggestion for Mr. Tse…I used to equalize lots of music, but I haven’t really found much of a need for an equalizer on the Dethonray, but occasionally it would be nice to have. The half-octave equalizer on the NW-WM1A has very fine db adjustments and adjustable Q and is out-of-this world excellent. Would it be possible to build an equalizer into a firmware update? And Mr. Tse,Congratulations on making such an AMAZING dap, and THANK YOU! THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!!!

Stopped working after a couple months. Again. DO NOT BUY
So I returned the first defective unit I got thinking "Oh, well, bad luck I got a lemon." After not a very long time I received a "new" unit (I say "new" because there's really no way of telling if it was new or not.)And then, after some light use of the DAP the thing is dead again. See the picture, that's all it does. Of course the window to return it expired so now I'm stuck with a very expensive paperweight. I cannot stress this enough, DO NOT BUY THIS PIECE OF JUNK.

Had Issues but I Liked the Design, the Audio, the Company
Re. Dethonray Prelude DTR1[update: My DTR1 has been working flawlessly after the company updated my software. The round-trip to China took a few weeks but I am very happy with the device]Tough to rate.Pros:- Wonderful audio quality- Very competitive price- The company owner is hard working and seems honest- I do not see my issue in other reviews- User upgradeable software- Owner offered to fix or replace mineCons:- Mine failed after a couple of weeks but a simple reset would fix it- After 45-days it would no longer reset requiring a ...- Flash update to fix my issues (this only worked once for me)- The owner honestly tried to help me but he is busy and often could not promptly reply to my frequent requests for help- The owner offered to replace/refund ... if I send my unit back to China- Fussy software is a blemish hiding the outstanding audio performanceI like the unit and the company and do not want to impact their business; however, I do think buyers should know what to expect. You will be getting an attractive, fine-sounding portable audio player with a very spartan feature set. That's okay with me. I was hoping the smaller feature set would make the unit more reliable but, in my case, this was not how it worked out. This is an audio-out device only: MicroSD card in, very well presented audio out. Exactly what I wanted.Ultimately, the DTR1 stopped turning on after about 2-weeks, requiring a restart using the reset button. This happened three times; after the third time, it would not reset and required an operating system reinstall. The unit required a reinstall again later but I was not successful, so the company (in China) reloaded the OS.The company owner replied to my every request for help, though it would sometime take a several days. Ultimately he offered to replace my unit or refund my purchase. I liked the DTR1 and thought mine may be defective v. a bad design; I asked for a replacement.Summary: My unit was shipped back by fast post and again sounds wonderful. Some folk, including me, might be put off by the operating kinks; however, I am satisfied with my purchase. Two stars off for it not being foolproof-reliable but a star back on for the outstanding support.

Best DAP without all today's cellphone features
I'm gonna keep this shortish and sweet. For my job I can't have a Bluetooth incorporated DAP and or anything Bluetooth for that matter and my ipod crapped out on me. Bought this because it fit the bill of what I needed and BANG! Didn't Know how good this DAP was until I played some of my favorite songs that I know by heart and the amount of detail I picked up and sound coming Into my ears was fantastic and has a slight warmth to it and doesn't sound analytical and dry.It has a dedicated charger and from what I read it's for a reason so take it or leave it and though the screen and menu is very simplistic it fulfills the role without a hitch....WHICH IS ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC.
