Q: will it work in the ceiling of a home closet to keep the hat safe?

I don't know about a ceiling. I keep mine attached to the inside of my car and it keeps my hat from being crushed and damaged.

Q: Can this be wall mounted?

My mistake. I thought I was reviewing another hat rack. This spring loaded unit should mount in the closet, maybe using wall anchors.

Q: Can I mount that mounting tab at a 90 angle?

Any angle is fine. Hold it in place and check how it will work for you. It's very versatile.

Q: I would like one that is 100% chrome, as in one of the pictures, but in the other the base appears black. Which do you get?

mine was all chromed wire the bracket appears to be blackish in a badly lit photo. its all chrome.
