Schneider 13" Quartz Cuckoo Clock with Tudor Style House
C**2
One of the best quartz cuckoo clocks available
I almost bought a mechanical 8-day clock as I really do like mechanical clocks, but there were some advantages of quartz that swayed me to that side:1) Quartz movement is generally hassle-free. You don't have to worry about the clock running a little fast or a little slow, there's less overall maintenance, and less risk for breaking when in transit.2) A quartz clock is significantly lighter, which makes it safe to hang with a basic hollow wall anchor. Hollow wall anchors may not be safe with a heavier mechanical clock, meaning you'll have to find a wall stud, which restricts where you can place the clock.3) A quartz clock requires less vertical clearance underneath. With mechanical clocks, you need about 6 feet clearance under the clock for the weights to descend, which generally means you'll need clearance all the way to the floor. If you want to hang your clock in a place where there's a table or desk against the wall, that's a problem with a mechanical clock. With a quartz clock, it's no issue at all. The weights and pendulum are decorative.4) You can adjust the volume on a quartz clock. Depending on where your clock is located, you may not want a cuckoo bird sounding off like a drill instructor. It's nice to be able to set the volume just where you want it. With mechanical clocks, the sound is either on or off...there's no intermediate.5) Quartz clocks have a wider music selection. This particular clock alternates among 12 different melodies. A mechanical clock will only play one or two tops.6) Quartz clocks have a light sensor shut-off (not sure if all, but this one does), which is more flexible for varying sleeping schedules. Mechanical clocks will either have to be shut off manually, or a few higher end ones may have time-based auto-shut offs that can't be adjusted, i.e. they'll shut off at 8pm and resume at 7am. If you don't like those times, oh well.7) Quartz clocks are significantly cheaper than their mechanical counterparts. All that said, I still love mechanical clocks, and they have their place. I got this quartz clock because it was going in my bedroom, and thus I wanted the light sensor shut-off, the volume control, the ability to mount with limited vertical clearance, etc. It works perfect for what I intended, and I have no complaints. There's not nearly as wide of a selection of quartz clocks available as there are mechanical, and only a few of the Black Forest clock makers have quartz models available. Each manufacturer tends to have their own style, and if you browse enough clocks, you'll likely find a manufacturer that fits your tastes the best. For me, that was Anton Schneider. You really can't go wrong with this clock.Note: Amazon's description is inaccurate with regards to the cuckoo bird sounding off on the half hour. The bird only cuckoos on the full hour.
