Colorado: A History of the Centennial State, Fifth Edition

I was seeking a comprehensive overview of Colorado history and that’s exactly what this is. Colorado: A History of the Centennial State examines the cultural, geographic, economic, social, and demographic history of Colorado from the pre-colonial period almost up to the present. Further, it seeks to interweave all of the major elements to explain how Colorado evolved into its current incarnation.My degree is in history and I taught history for many years; consequently, this kind of long, textbook-style examination is exactly what I want. However, for many people this book may prove too dry and too long. Additionally, the additions to the first edition (I read the 5th) are sometimes clumsily inserted rather than seamlessly integrated. Unfortunately, these random insertions tend to involve women’s and minority history, which comes off as condescending. Indeed, there are several times in which a paragraph has obviously been inserted and several paragraphs later some of the same information is repeated as if for the first time. It’s probably time this tome underwent a thorough rewrite. Nevertheless, it does an adequate job of providing a sweeping examination of a complex state history.

An interesting and instructive state history book, that could be used at several levels of education. Enjoyed it and felt that I learn a lot about the state I have lived in for over half my life..

Just returned from Colorado. It was great to be back in that fantastic state where I went to undergrad (CU) and graduate school(DU). We were up in the mountains and we visited Doc Holiday's or as it ie spelled on the memorial 'Holliday' grave site in the oldest pioneer cemetery in Glenwood Springs. Much has changed with a four lane highway going at least as far as Glenwood Springs. I was looking through the Centennial State's book before I left, and I was pleasantly surprised as how much I remembered from the grand years I spent there. Of course, there is much more to read and I am looking forward it. Great book & dynamite state !!

I purchased this for a class and it is rather nice. I suggest getting the eBook as this makes looking up terms and finding someone's name an easy search button away. I'm half-way through the class and I still enjoy reading about the history of the state I will soon be teaching in.

Everything you'd wanna know about Colorado

This book has been a great compliment to my Legal History of Colorado course. This book led me to read more about the history of Colorado. Can't recommend it enough.

I kind of love the kindle version of textbooks. This was my first one and I thought I'd hate it, but you can highlight without actually damaging and u can search within the book. It's way cheaper this way too.

Good history book. Contains a lot of information.
