Clearfast is an isotonic carbohydrate rich beverage with added supplements addressing preoperative hydration and nutritional needs. This medical beverage can be safely consumed up to 2 hours prior to the induction of anesthesia. Over 80 million surgical procedures, requiring some form of anesthesia or sedation, are performed annually in the U.S. Though the (very serious) risk of aspiration of stomach contents is extremely low, a majority of patients are still subjected to traditional, rigorous preoperative fasting protocols. Total abstinence typically starts at midnight prior to the day of surgery - no matter the actual time of the scheduled procedure. A recent article in the Association of PeriOperative Registered Nurses Journal estimates the average patient's fasting period to be 11 hours. And, while prolonged fasting from solids can be clinically justified, similar fasting from clear liquids cannot be. The intake of 400mL, of a 12.5% carbohydrate-rich drink two hours prior to surgery did not increase residual gastric volume (RGV) or acidity, but improved patients' well-being and comfort. Electrolytes - Contains sodium and potassium to replenish the body's fluid and electrolyte levels after dehydration caused by fasting. Vitamin A - Acts as an antioxidant and is necessary for function and repair of epithelial tissue. Selenium - A trace mineral that acts as an antioxidant and is essential for healthy immune function. When combined with Zinc may reduce the risk of infections. Zinc - A trace mineral, essential for protein synthesis, that plays a well documented role in wound healing.
