The Fault in Our Stars Book Review
The book “The Fault in Our Stars” by John Green is about a 17 year old girl named Hazel Grace Lancaster who opened her eyes to the real world, outside of her hospital bed. Hazel is very kind, considerate, and grateful. Her character throughout the story reminds me of an actual person. This fictional novel that takes place in Indianapolis is a romance story between Hazel and Augustus Waters. Augustus Waters is a sweet and caring boy that has trouble showing his true self. She meets him in a cancer patient support group. After introducing themselves to each other, she finds out that Augustus is there for his friend Isaac who has a tumor, and that Augusts had osteosarcoma before. The two end up recommending each others favorite novels to one another. In Hazels favorite story there is a cutoff at the end of the book. Hazel wants to find out what’s the rest of the story that is about a girl with cancer. Hazel talks to Augustus about how she relates to the book, this pushes Augustus to contact the author. He finds out the author will only answer Hazels questions by meeting in person. One problem though is that he lives in Amsterdam. Augusts finds a way to go to Amsterdam with Hazel, but while Hazel decides if she wants to go or not they face some difficulties based on her health. One of Hazel’s doctors recommends that she goes on the trip even though her health isn’t the most stable. They go to Amsterdam but are disappointed by what they discover about the author. The next day there is a big confession made by Augustus about his personal health. At this point in the book there is a change in mood and a feeling of sadness expressed. The book ends with these feelings in mind. Over all I think that the book was written very well because I was able to feel what the characters were going through just through his writing. The book is touching, sweet, and inspiring. John Green has also written other great books such as “Looking for Alaska” and “Paper Towns.” I would recommend this book because it gives a good outlook on how the smallest things can affect you in the biggest ways. Even though it's not what I expected it to be, it went above my standards.
