A quick, breezy read.
My first encounter of Giger's thought process, the Taschen book with the purple and black cover, was disappointing. Its images weren't comparable to his Alien designs. Spooky and not much else. This book has fewer artwork but what's included is explained well. The images are his usual bio-mechanoid sex and violence and death horrors. His telling of how he became him is very entertaining and funny. He starts out with seriousness like expressing how loving his parents were as a child, especially his mother. Then devolves in to a deadpan retelling of becoming over sexed before he learned to read. You can hear his voice in your head and the glee he's taking knowing people will be reading this stuff. Much of it satirizes the repressive society he lived in, especially religion and the human suffering it can inspired. He tells of the time a college friend showed him pictures of an execution that haunted him for days and as usual concludes with reluctantly accepting life's ironies. My photos show a series of images titled Passages. Everyone assumes they're photographs. Actually they're individual paintings showcasing his technical brilliance. His explanation of their mechanical origins and connecting sexual references keeps up with his obsessions: birth, death and as much sex as you can find in between.

Great coffee table book and short read
Although I wasn't expecting an deep dive I felt a compulsion to keep reading and looking over the images in the book over and over. I love the art of Giger and the writing is quality. The print quality is pretty good. This book has a weird but nice plasticy feel to the paper. Though nothing bothersome just a note. Nothing substantial but something to burn a little time and ogle about if you're into art.

Fun Edition
Excellent edition. Showed up quickly and in perfect condition. There is a larger, newer edition but it retails for nearly $200, so getting this one was a nice compromise.

An important alternative art document
There's no one like Giger. Imitators, yes, loads of those, but Giger brought something new and strange to the table, a bizarre mix of fear and sensuality that bordered on obscene. Quite a few of these most obvious pieces lie in the pages of this coffee table book. There are also pieces of texts that detail Giger and his work, one even written by him. A good beginning step into the world of biomechanics. I just wish there was a huge comprehensive study in print.
