Animals in Motion (Dover Anatomy for Artists)

The book is very useful. Its thoroughness of animals featured is commendable and outstanding. However, in some of the frames, the animals' details are difficult to see. But, then again, the book was originally published in 1957. I'm guessing not all photography was excellent quality back then. Of course, the book's purpose is as a reference guide to help someone authenticate their artistic representations of animals in motion. Therefore, the owner and user of this book wouldn't need to see details on the animal photos, just the form.

I purchased this for my daughter for Christmas and found that it was the best gift I had gotten her in all her 18 years of life. The still shots of the animal motion is quite thorough and I believe that an artist of any level would find this book beneficial when trying to capture action in nearly any art media. It is also nice to have it all at your fingertips, not having to hunt it down on the internet.

Well, this book is a classic and at the time it came out, a revolutionary one! From today's modern technology perspective it has limited value simply because there is SO much out there in the world wide web to show an artist the human form in motion.However, from a historical viewpoint it changed the way artists painted animals in motion, most notably, the horse! In spite of today's equipment being used easily by the average consumer to slow and stop motion, the results discovered and published in this book were the result of ingenious deduction and long, hard work to dispell previously held conceptions! For that reason it deserves a place on the shelf of every artist's book shelf!

This is a really nice book, the binding, the page weight. The photos are high quality the pages are somewhat glossy, plates are numbered with specific details and a table of contents. Awesome.

Muybridge's "Animals in Motion" is a fantastic study of many animals and how they walk/run/climb/etc. Being able to see shot for shot how some animals move has been more helpful than any video of the same action. I highly recommend this book, even just as a study to how things move. It's worth the price.

I'm a little disappointed that there weren't more cycles with dogs and cats.

I am an artist that paints the different species in the animal world, including reptiles and amphibians, and also landscapes. I work mainly in oils and acrylics but also pastels and watercolor. I use Animals in Motion for the correct positions of the animals I paint. It's an invaluable reference source.

I only needed to consult this book a few times for projects with Animals involved, but it was definitely worth it.You could get video footage of YouTube, convert the video, freeze frame and dissect it, but I found this book quicker and less hassle.

The images in this book are not very well exposed.. quite dark or overexposed. It's not as much of a useful reference as the human version

Un libro histórico, un clásico, un "diccionario de imágenes" para el uso de cualquier artista que quiera recrear el movimiento. No es didáctico, no enseña a dibujar, sólo muestra ejemplos.

Une partie importante de l'ouvrage est consacrée aux chevaux, le reste à d'autres animaux domestiques et sauvages.Ce qui me déçoit dans ce livre, c'est la qualité des photos qui est vraiment plus que juste : certaines sont correctes mais nombre d'entre elles sont floues et, donc, difficilement exploitables. Il y a même parfois des parties tronquées.Je ne sais pas si je vais le garder ou pas... malheureusement, je crois qu'il n'en existe pas d'autres de ce genre. Dommage, car c'est un outil vraiment très pratique pour les dessinateurs.

Un livre très utile pour comprendre les mouvements de déplacements des animaux mais aussi pour comprendre leur anatomie ! Un livre très intéressant pour les dessineux ! ;)
