"And thus ween ofttimes . . . that God is their enemy, when he is their full friend" (chapter 75).
. . . Got that? This is the challenge with this edition of "The Cloud of Unknowing," which is a slightly modernized version of the original Middle English, the 1912 edition. There are many nuggets (and more) in this classic. The challenge is recognizing them because the Middle English is so difficult (to me, and probably to most readers) that it is it hard to understand the text. I would often stop and re-read passages and still not understand. So to get more out of this classic, a better translation would likely be helpful. This is easier than understanding Beowulf was in high school/college English, but still a challenge. This edition was prepared by Evelyn Underhill (1875-1941), the English spiritual writer who wrote much, including the still-in-print 1911 "Mysticism: A Study in Nature and Development of Spiritual Consciousness" (12th, Revised Edition available on amazon.com). This edition of "The Cloud of Unknowing" is print on demand, and as with many such printings, not much care has been taken in cleaning up the type. All considered, however, I'd highly recommend this book as there are many insights likely to help readers today. And I think it is good to be familiar with the Christian classics.

GREAT AND DEEP AND MEANINGFUL READ
I have loved reading this old and complicated book that digs into our relationship with God. It is not light reading. Came highly recommended& is so worth the commitment it requires to get through it.
