HUGE! Healthy! Super fresh!
I ordered the fresh galangal, because I wanted to plant some. With the turmeric and ginger I had bought before, it took me several tries to get it to grow, and the first generation struggled. I had purchased them from the supermarket, or from reputable catalogs...still it was a struggle. These roots were enormous, as if fresh dug that day, and I no sooner put them in the ground than they popped up like daisies and have been growing great guns ever since! The juice from the root I did not plant was plentiful and pungent, perfect for cooking/baking. I'd definitely order from them again!

Lots of crisp, plump galangal
I was really happy with the amount of rhizomes that came in this order. They were crisp, fresh, very aromatic and flavorful. If you make a lot of Thai, Vietnamese or other southeast Asian food, galangal will help you achieve the complex flavors you want. If you have no access to an Asian market, this is the only way to get fresh rhizomes. And if you live someplace warm or have a greenhouse or sunspace, you can plant a few of them and let them multiply. Fresh galangal also freezes well. Just cut the rhizomes into two-inch long pieces and freeze them in a zipper bag. Use them within 6 months. Thaw, smash with a cleaver, slice into matchsticks and simmer with whatever you are making. It's also good in cocktails.

Root was moldy and could not be used.
Disappointed with the product. The product was totally different from the picture. Product was in pieces with all fresh growing ends removed. There were some cavernous rotting areas inside. About half the material was usable for grinding. This was my first time in buying this root and wanted to use it in some ferments. Very disappointing. It is not allowed to return this product and I have contacted the seller for a replacement, but have not heard from them. I hope the seller will resend a fresh piece.

Very fresh and authentic. Order this and save yourself the trouble.
Excellent quality product. I’ve had so much trouble finding galangal in any of the Asian grocery stores around me (I’m talking multiple trips to several stores over the course of a week) that I just decided to order it online. The galangal arrived quickly and was very fresh! If you’re looking to grow your own you could likely propagate it from this.It added a lot of authenticity to my Thai cooking and I couldn’t be more pleased. I couldn’t use all of it so I cut some of it up into 1-inch pieces, and some into rounds (depending on what I would need it for) and froze it. If I ever run out I would definitely order it again.

Arrived fresh as pictured
Never used galangal before or so I thought. Actually, it is an authentic traditional ingredient in Thai red and green curry pastes. I had been eating it for years! I decided I wanted to make my own Thai red/green curry pastes, East Asian soups, East Indian dishes, and herbal hot/iced teas. This is my second time ordering galangal. Each time I have been very satisfied with the freshness, quantity, & quality. But this second time there was a third (smaller brown) piece that was usable but definitely on the verge of having seen better days.

I hate to complain
Well, I hate to complain, and/or leave less than 3 stars....but what is pictured and what I received are not the same.I can go down to one of many local Asian stores and buy this root, for roughly $4 a pound. I paid the extra money here with the intention of getting roots with nice long stems/stocks, as pictured (for garden / herb planting). What I received was 14oz of roots, as if I was at the produce section...no stock, stem, or shoots. When I wrote the seller, their response was "Our galangal root can be planted, but it will take some times like ginger. Galangal also come in different sizes.". Um, okay. That did not address my issue. Oh well.UPDATE- 2 months later.... I adjusted the 2 stars to 3 stars. Even though I did not get my original complain / issue addressed, I now have two beautiful little starts/shoots growing from the roots I received. One is approximately 1.5" tall, and the other is just barely cresting up from the soil. Two months ago I planted the roots in a large pot, just barely below the top of the soil (with the root barely visible) with a 50/50 compost/garden soil mix, and keeping the soil watered, daily. I have had much success with this in the past when growing ginger.

Fresh and plump. Got more than expected.
I've never used this before but I was looking at a few Indonesian recipes and it called for this root. I miss the Indonesian food I ate growing up and decided to get an authentic cookbook so I can recreate some of the dishes. I've been making most of the recipes from memory but my memory isn't good enough to get that flavor I miss. I don't know if my family ever used this root in Indonesia but I remember a lot of ginger root. Can't wait to try the recipes with this root instead.I'm impressed with how much I received and how fresh and clean it is. I received 2 large pieces and 1 smaller piece. I have enough to use fresh, freeze for later and maybe try to plant some.

Fresh Galangal Ginger in two big clusters
The Galangal Ginger arrived in good condition--fairly well packed. One piece broke off during shipping but was still as fresh as it could be. I sliced 10 thin pieces (paper thin) out of this loose piece and put them into a cup of boiling hot water and waited for 15 minutes. This was my ginger drink. From what I have been told was that this would help to ease off allergy discomfort. The drink tasted a bit of spicy and was okay. I think it did help on my allergy discomfort and my throat was not as itchy and cleared up in a couple of days. The left over piece - I made two more drinks out of it. The two big clusters (each weighed 7 ounces) -- I planted them in my garden next to my Butterfly Ginger plants (they are all under my oak tree in partial shape). I found out that Butterfly Ginger loves that particular spot other than any location in my backyard. I live in SC Charleston area. I hope the Galangal Ginger will love this spot too. I received the package in a week after I ordered it and it was excellent since it came all the way from Thailand. Thank You.
