Pioneer Quality & User Experience at an Amazing Value
There really isn't too much to say. This is a compact and reliable DVD player that will suit most any user. The unit carries a small footprint so it will fit easily on small shelves and in most any entertainment stand. The unit has enough connections in the back for most users. Even home theater enthusiasts should be content with the connectivity of such a small unit.My favorite aspect about this unit is that it has buttons on the front of the unit. What a novel concept! It is so nice to make any setting or menu adjustments while I am standing in front of the unit and not have to walk back hunting for the remote to make even the simplest of changes. Other brands seem to be taking the sleek and clean design route and making the remote control a required item in order to use the unit. The controls on the front in no way make the unit look complicated or cluttered and there are enough controls there that I can use almost every feature without even needing the remote. I wish more brands would take this approach. While I know DVD players are becoming a thing of the past as Blu-Ray treks on through, this is still a high quality unit that offers beyond just video and audio quality that Pioneer is known for. It offers a genuine user interaction that is missed in many of today's electronics.

Old Faithful Never Chokes
I'm coming up on my second anniversary with this incredibly versatile little baby and I couldn't be happier that we're still together.I've never had a disc that it wouldn't play. The format (NTSC vs PAL vs whatever) is a total non-issue and thought I've heard other reviewers complain about the Region issue, I'm not quite sure why that's never slowed me down. Yes, I'm sure I've put other regions' discs into it and yes, this is an Amazon verified purchase so I AM reviewing the right model! Upscaling of DVDs has left those who poo-pooed non-BluRay, non-natively high def input speechless and without an argument, though admittedly I also set my Onkyo receiver pass-through to upscale as well. Menus are simple and easy to navigate, and I HATE tinkering much beyond basic setup with what should be simple appliances like these. Playing items from my USB stick is priceless as well.Okay, there are minor disappointments, but those are largely a product of this being a several-years-old piece of merchandise. No network connectivity or "apps," it's a bit slow to load a disc at times, and the price hasn't dropped much since I first bought it. That last part may be due to demand for this reliable standby, however, like with the older Cisco routers that hobbyists love to tinker with.

Solid upconverting DVD player used HDMI > DVI
I've had several Sony DVD players but have not been impressed by their durability - after a couple of years, their lenses just go. So when I needed a new one, I tried to avoid getting another one but they had the best reviews, so I bought one. And the output jack was defective. Tech support was beyond moronic. An audiophile friend said that I could upconvert via HDMI to my 4 year old flat panel via an HDMI > DVI cable, so I picked one up (cheap) and ordered the Pioneer (refurbished) because one of the reviewers said that he'd tried it and it worked connected that way. Just know that, with DVI, you need a separate audio cable (red/white RCA) and you're good to go.It came today, set up very quickly and easily converted to upscaling. I have no idea whether the picture definition is "perfect" but it is noticeably better than standard DVD. The remote is well laid out and the build quality on both the player and the remote feel more solid than the Sony I had.In short, this is what a consumer electronics purchase should be - simple to install and operate and defect free. Hopefully, it will last more than a couple of years.

solid performer, remote allows to mute vocal, not 100% multi-zone
this is not for all forms of compression media, especially media made abroad like V-CDs from South East Asia. Playing the standards media listed as playable by the DV-420 would be best as far as how one would like this product to deliver. Pioneer remotes in general allow vocal sound to be canceled for Karaoke singing, although this player is not equipped w/ microphone jacks therefor. Response to the remote is good as in all Pioneers. Mechanical response and noise level are on par satisfactory. Menu is fairly straight forward. Overall cosmetics to me are near great for its price tag, although the build/sturdiness is commensurate w/ (or slightly better than) that in other brands in this price range. Remote layout is not great but useful, not tacky looking like many. If you expect this to play all formats, you might be in for some displeasant surprise. the player is very good if the anticipation to utilize that multi-zone capability is sized down a bit.

So far so good!
I purchased this player to replace an upconverting Toshiba that went south on me. So far, everything works and works fairly well. The upconversion works much better than it did on the Toshiba. DivX movies play well as do DVD-R's. DivX movies take a little bit of time to read and start playing, my guess is this has something to do with the processing the unit has to do. I have not tried DVD+R's.Fast forwarding and reverse on works well and does not tend to overshoot (where you stop being far ahead or behind of where the picture was when you hit the play button) - once again, a problem I've had with multiple Toshiba DVD players. My only minor gripe is that this unit does take a little while to start up (10-15 seconds?) and I usually end up hitting the power button repeatedly before any lights come up on the thing.I have not tried the USB reader on the front of the unit.

Pioneer DVD players - play everything, look and sound perfect, hold up forever
I have bought a few of these for friends and family and I have a Pioneer of my own (different model). The great thing about them is 1) the picture and sound are wonderful, 2) they play ANYTHING you toss in them and 3) they hold up like iron. I know you can buy a small Sony or whatever for much less and I know we're all going to watch movies that stream to our homes from cyberspace and yes I know the DVD is dead, but so is vinyl and I still have a very nice turntable/tonearm/cartridge setup. If you are even considering a DVD player, give Pioneer a long look before buying something else.

quick service
The DVD player arrived faster than expected although parcelforce had issues with their computer system so we had to wait for the player for ten days after we paid customs. The item is brand new and works great. Seller to recommend.
