Targeted at KS3 students who have not mastered basic KS2 skills....
As a private tutor working with disadvantaged students , I find these books are a very valuable resource. They are designed for KS3 students who have failed to master basic mathematical skills from KS2. Without these skills they find it incredibly difficult to cope with the demands of the KS3 curriculum and in many cases ‘give up on themselves’. I teach students between the ages of 11-14 who do not know their times tables, struggle with place value and basic addition and subtraction. It is this cohort of learners that these books are targeted towards, to give them confidence that they ‘can do maths’ moving forwards. To see the reaction from a young person when they have achieved success by using these books makes them worth every penny!

Confidence building Maths practice, with ANSWER SECTION at the back (non-removable)
Measuring around 29.5 cm x 20.75 cm, with 36 x double page spread EXERCISES, this is WORKBOOK 1 of a set of 5, each one using the same format and gradually getting that little more difficult. The back-cover detail is covered in the above stock images, at the time of writing, but it is a shame that the ‘LOOK INSIDE’ facility is not currently available on this first book to get an idea of the layout & aim, like there is on both: WORKBOOK 4 and WORKBOOK 5The other 2 workbooks in the set are:WORKBOOK 2 and WORKBOOK 3ooOoo~ CGP~ KS3 CATCH-UP MATHS: BUILDING NUMBER SKILLS STEP BY STEP~ 2018This first book may appear easy, to some, but the method behind the book series is explained in ‘How ‘Catch-Up Maths’ Works’, on page 1 (1st image below refers), which opens with:📝 ‘This book is designed to improve number fluency by building up number facts in students’ long-term memory. This frees up space in their working memory, which they can then use for problem-solving.‘INTERLEAVING’ and ‘SPACING’~ Topics are INTERLEAVED ~ students practise several topics in one exercise, instead of repeatedly practising the same thing. This helps students learn to choose appropriate methods for tackling different types of problems.~ Practice on each topic is SPACED through the books at increasing intervals.Recalling content which is not fresh in students’ minds has been shown to improve learning…’ooOooThe inside back cover (image below refers) shows what this workbook 1 covers within the 4 areas, namely:※ NUMBER & PLACE VALUE:~ Place value up to 1000~ Round to the nearest 10 or 100※ ADDITION & SUBTRACTION:~ Mental addition and subtraction involving 2-digit and 3-digit numbers~ Addition and subtraction with money※ MULTIPLICATION & DIVISION:~ 2, 3, 4, 5 & 10 times tables~ Multiply 2-digit numbers by 10 mentally※ FRACTIONS, DECIMALS & PERCENTAGES:~ Find ¼, ½, or ¾ of a shape, quantity or numberThe back inside cover shows the level of content of the 5 workbooks (last image below refers).[19 images attached](09/08/19)

Another quality CGP workbook
This is the first of five workbooks that bridges the transition between KS2 and KS3. It contains 36 two-page tests which reinforce basic number skills and times tables.Lots of questions and answers provided at the back.

Elementary maths skills essential for secondary school
So many children enter Key Stage 3 without the necessary skills to build upon in secondary school. CGP are attempting to provide workbooks to help these students bridge the gap and give them the best possible chance of success. I have only got Workbook 1 so I cannot comment on the series but I was a bit taken aback with quite how basic it was both in questioning and style. It reminds me of many Key Stage 1 and 2 books but with a cover that makes older children feel as though they are being taught more than just the most simplistic of maths. The exercises are not labelled with topics. However, each one covers a different topic starting with place value on two digit numbers with questions such as continue the pattern counting up or down or writing a one digit number given in words. Exercise 2 has questions such as 1+4 = or 25 has __ tens. The book has a range of topics and finishes on subtraction with money and adding numbers mentally (243+32=)It is a good basic workbook for children to work through on their own or in a smaller support group.
