Miami Vice - The Complete Collection
I was a huge fan of Miami Vice back when it originally aired, but being a young teenager at the time I think a lot of it might have been lost on me.25 years later and, aside from the 80's fashion, Miami Vice stands the test of time quite well. There are few shows that hit the ground running, but it's almost like Don Johnson & Philip Michael Thomas were born to play Crockett & Tubbs.Other things take a while to settle down - their initially wishy-washy captain isn't replaced by Edward James Olmos' smouldering Castillo until a handful of season one episodes have passed, but his arrival sets the dynamic of the show for the rest of its run. Similarly, Jan Hammer's main title theme takes about the same amount of time to become the polished version we know and love, but by the time all the parts are in place, Miami Vice is compulsive viewing. With its mix of strong plots, great acting from the core cast members, excellent music and gorgeous locations, it really hits its stride during season one, with season two delivering in spades. The quality can't be maintained, though, and the plots tail off in later seasons despite the best efforts of the cast. There are enough highlights in there to warrant having all the seasons, though, even if the first two are the stand-outs.The quality of the DVD's themselves is pretty good for an 80's show - their saving grace being that Miami Vice was filmed rather than taped, so there's none of that nasty colour bleed and upscaled it looks younger than its 25 years. The only thing I find leaving me wanting is the lack of extras, but then it's not as if things in the 80's were filmed to super serve folk on a subsequent DVD release, so it's hard to be too disappointed. To revisit a cracking slice of TV nostalgia, the Miami Vice Collection is an essential purchase for anyone who was a fan of the show.

Surprisingly good.
As a child of the 70's, I remember fondly watching this show in my 'formative teenage years'. As such I was slightly worried that the 'campness' of the 80's would ruin my memories of this show. However, I was pleasantly surprised. Sure some of the outfits and fashions are a little cringe-worthy, and the way that certain characters act (not the acting, however) can be a bit hammy. But for those of us that remember that time period, I recall people wearing their jackets with the sleeves rolled up and the HUGE amount of pastel colours and neons in the clothing.None of this - in my opinion, at least - detracts from what is a well written and well acted show. The show also benefitted from Michael Mann's involvement; a lot of the stylised look of Miami Vice comes from him and can also be seen in his later work - Manhunter, Heat, and the film Miami Vice. One of the earliest episodes has Crockett and Tubbs, driving the Daytona Spyder at night through near deserted streets to the strains of Phil Collins' "In the air tonight". The only sound was the sounds of the guns being loaded and the minimal dialogue of the characters. The whole scene just built tension and the seriousness of what was to come. Overall, really enjoying it all over again. The packaging is really smart too and doesn't look unsightly on a shelf with lots of other DVD's/blu-ray's.If you remember this show, but are unsure of how it has aged; accept it for what it is - a show set in, and from the 80's - and sit back and enjoy.
