The numbers are ridiculously small, and difficult to see ...
The numbers are ridiculously small, and difficult to see. Enormously heavy wooden box (beautiful), but then the tiny plastic pieces and flimsy board are hardly worth the extra cost. If only the numbers were larger, it would be at least usable. I may have to find another model, as the numbers are razor thin and hardly 2mm high. Even my 9-year-old son must strain his eyes to see the tiny numbers. Absurd. Wish I could return it.

Delivers the classic game but poor quality and design in some respects.
This is the set you buy if you are nostalgic for the original strategy from the '70s. The new versions have only 30 pieces instead of 40 and have some different themes. This set has pluses and minuses. We have the original but it was in rough shape so I wanted to upgrade. Overall I would describe myself as disappointed. The Good: This is a very heavy and sturdy wooden box. And the board is the modern three/fold variety. The pieces look almost exactly as they did in the original (same dimensions and very similar colors) and the rules are the same as well. The Bad: Several elements of the construction of this were quite disappointing:* The pieces. These the same dimensions as the pieces in the 70's original but they are worse quality. In the original set the piece types were embossed and bolder. The numbers were easier to read. On the new one the piece types are just printed on there with no embossing and the numbers are smaller...very hard to read. We dislike them enough that we swapped out the pieces that came with this for the ones in our 1970's set.* The piece carriers. You have to set the pieces in individually, rather than them being in rows like in the 1970's version. Much more time-consuming. And they don't stay in there during storage. You have to bag them anyway. In the old version it was super cheap plastic--less sturdy--but it worked and this doesn't really.* There is no printing on the side of the box, so when this is on the shelf, it's not obvious what it is. The gold lettering on the top is plastic that is glued on there. My flags broke right away. I think I will peel the name off and stick it on the side. Very passive-aggressive to make a box that will not allow you to reasonably stack things on it.Overall this game is fine. It more-or-less delivers the original game, but there are some build-quality and design issues that, for me, make this far from a "master's" edition.

Perfect Classic Game
Growing up on Stratego, I was somewhat apprehensive after reading the other reviews detailing damaged boxes, small numbers, etc.As the price isn't too excessive, I went for it for nostalgias sake.I honestly believe you will not be disappointed if you are a fan of the original (or playing for the first time ...!). The case is very sturdy, the board is how I remember it & the pieces are well-illustrated!Fun for most ages & the game doesn't drag on - truly a classic!

Play it with your child
The box is ok that it's in. Just be careful with it. For some reason there were no directions in it. So I printed them off online not a major setback. The Spy is a 1 instead of an S. It's a board game. Not a precisssion instrument. So the board is cardboard, the wooden box is not exquisitely crafted, the pieces are plastic. But it's better then what we had as kids with the cardboard box we Used masking tape to keep the box together. However, I don't recall having difficulty seeing the numbers on the pieces like I do now. So since they redesigned it; making the numbers clearer would have been helpful for aged eyes. But all in all my 6th grade son caught on quickly and really liked this gift. Just don't hand your child the game and be done. Play it with them.

Hugely disappointing -- shoddy construction and poor design
The box fell apart completely upon opening. I don't even think that it was glued together. The pieces are poorly marked so they are almost impossible to read. I love this game but this edition is far inferior to others I have seen. Buyer beware... and consider looking elsewhere.

Poor quality
It comes in a fancy box....that's the good part. The pieces are poorly marked and hard to read. One piece had no markings at all. It wasn't rubbed off, it wasn't light, it just wasn't marked. After counting, I determined it was a marshall, so, it didn't make the game unplayable, but, it's still a crappy quality product. Fun game....just don't buy this version. Not worth the money.

Great Game But Not Perfect
I received the packaged game on time. It was packed in bubble wrap but not sufficient to avoid minor impact damage to the wooden box. I repaired the box with Elmer's glue. It's truly a great game, even for adults but the ranking numbers on the soldier pieces are hard to read because they are very small numbers. Otherwise the game was complete with all 80 soldier pieces, 2 racks, playing board and instructions. If it were my product, I would redesign the soldier pieces to be larger for easier rank identification or otherwise enlarge the rank identifications on them. Also, I would require better, box packing for shipment to avoid very possible damages by careless handling during shipment.

Looks really good but be careful of the painting on the face ...
Looks really good but be careful of the painting on the face of each piece. I have one piece of the whole set that is missing the small number of one piece. Other than that this is an excellent set.. Recommended for the Stratego fan of old or new...
