Q: How does the lock mechanism work

Hi, the lock mechanism is sold separately, you will require a XFORT mortice bathroom lock. The Mortice bathroom lock will go into the timber door with the handles sitting on either side of the door and a spindle (long metal bar included with these handles) connects them all up.

Q: Cant remove door lock supplied off spindle

If the original spindle doesn't fit it used the new one supplied

Q: The recommended lock isn’t available? What else can I use?

Vague question. The 'recommended lock' you refer to. Is it the door handle? If so if it isn't available you cant get one so if its for bathroom/ toilet I suggest a temporary measure would be a sign outside of the door on Blu Tac saying 'engaged' when someone is in there. Failing that sing - loudly.
