Yes, the stones are magnets. They are strong enough they often pull themselves into stacks when put in a pile. I would not hesitate to play with the board mounted on the wall.

Great question! The set itself is actually pretty big when unfurled, so comfortably playing it on a flight probably isn't possible. I'd recommend the 13x13 magnetic wallet set (also from Yellow Mountain Imports). I own both.
