No because the general rule is that the file should be the same size as the string, up to no more than .003" - .004" larger than the string size. In other words, for a .009" string you would use the .010" file.

Q: Can you use a 10 file on a 9

The general rule is that the file should be the same size as the string, up to no more than .003" - .004" larger than the string. If you go much larger, the slot can become so large that the string vibrates in the slot, causing a buzz. If you use a file smaller than the string, the slot will be too tight, causing tuning issues.

Q: My acoustic is tuned at 440 but any open cords with the B string involved sounds sharp, could the nut slot on the B possibly be not cut deep enough?

That is certainly a possibility. There are several variables to consider And it’s best to use a good tuner and make sure the neck is straight. If you are new to doing set-ups on acoustic guitars it would be a good idea to learn more about the process. There are plenty of forums, books, and videos that provide instructions. Good luck!
