outstanding A++
The Think-car Scan 689 is hands down one of the best scan tools I’ve ever used. It’s very user-friendly and walks you through each function step by step. While you do need to know a bit about your car, the scanner provides clear and helpful information—and even suggests fixes for problems it finds.I brought it with me to check out a used vehicle, and I’m so glad I did. My old $49 scanner wouldn’t have caught half the issues this one did. It scanned the full system—engine, transmission, BCM—and found problems that helped me decide not to buy the car. That alone saved me thousands.Yes, it’s a little slow when doing a full scan, but the results are worth the wait.This tool does things most home mechanics can’t normally do—like releasing brakes for service on newer cars, recalibrating sensors, and even programming key fobs. It does things pro mechanics pay thousands per year to access.For the price, the ThinkScan 689 is a steal. It feels solid, works like professional equipment, and comes with free lifetime updates. I absolutely love this thing—worth every penny!

Works well and does the job perfectly
This really is a great bit of kit for trouble shooting faults, either for complete novices like me or a garage, it really is useful and I could have done with it a couple of months ago to diagnose what was wrong with my headlight before spending 2.8K on a new one.Though I have no warning lights coming up I have checked my cars system and I now know that it's running a bit lean and that its due to a spark plug, I would never have known this until the spark plug completely failed and I'd have had to take the car in and pay at least £60 or £70 to be told this.I'm still learning my way around all the options, most I have never heard of but I am starting to gain knowledge and gaining more confidence as I go, plus there's plenty of videos on how to use identical models as this.I haven't used the bidirectional options yet, but this does look really handy to have, but you really do need to know what you're doing before making changes.There is a bluetooth version but this one uses the lead, which isn't that long to be honest, suits me fine though for my needs at the moment.A great bit of kit with lifetime updates and one that I'm really happy to have, and I know will be saving me quite a bit of money in the future, I would certainly recommend.

A quality pro OBD2 scanner
This review is for the 'Thinkcar ThinkScan 689 OBD2 Scanner, 2024 New Bidirectional Scan Tool with Full System Diagnose, 34+ Reset Services, 3000+ Active Test, ECU Coding, CAN-FD & DOIP, FCA SGW, Lifetime Free Update'. At time of review this scanner was selling for £399.98I picked this scanner up as an upgrade to the Thinkscan 672, which I reviewed 6 months ago. As I was very happy with the Thinkscan 672 I wanted to focus on the differences between the two units.As I am a complete amateur to car maintain ace my review cannot delve into the intricacies of the tools on the device, but I was very impressed with the features of the software loaded on that tablet, and this one contains an upgraded version of that same software. If researching this scanner, I would certainly recommend you also read up on previous versions.I found that scanner supported my quite old and niche car and gave me a large amount of diagnosics. The tablet contains a lot of tools, such as mechanics reports, printing and support for USB devices such as camera's. Online support is available and this product is really aimed towards the professional mechanicBut my interest here was to compare the upgrades.First, you get a 8 inch screen now, with an improved resolution of 1280*800, a nice upgrade over the previous models 1024*600 7" screen, and honestly it would be awkward using a bigger screen. You now get 64Gb storage over the previous models 32Gb. I could not find reference to this new models CPU or memory, but assume they have not been upgraded simply by the almost identical boot times (approx 30 seconds to boot). The OS runs smoothly and quickly with no perceived lag. The battery has also been upgraded, so the larger screen shouldn't cause any battery life issues.General construction is very similar. The tablet has been impressively ruggedised, with a quality chunky power switch and robust ports. One great addition on the back is the integrated, very tough, solid, stand.Both the old and new scanners supported free lifetime updates. I note that this one supports more vehicles out of the box, but noted that this one supported more reset services out of the box. While I had the old model updated to its latest patch, I also noted that this device, despite all its similarities, was running a slightly higher version of the OS out of the box.Final thoughts - this device is both wonderful and complete overkill for my own personal use, but if I were an amateur or professional mechanic I would be very pleased with its ruggedness, speed of boot and operation and of course the lifetime support. While as an IT professional I would prefer to see the latest version of Android in use, I don't see any reason for it in this application.

Amazing scanner
I'm new to these sort of machines but just having bought a used car I couldn't turn down the chance to get this and test it out.It's very intuitive and programmed in such a way that it's an active tutorial as you're using it and gives you step-by-step instructions.It spits out loads of information and provides solutions for any issues it finds, it's really incredible! Half of it I don't understand but this tool is also an educational device to learn about your car.This sort of tool is invaluable if you're shopping for used cars as you can find out all sorts of things whilst scanning and help you aid your decision whether or not its' worth purchasing. This can save you a load of headaches down the road!I'd say this is good value for money, I've seen other devices that are far more dear but this is a powerful utility and machine. Like that you never have to pay for software updates and it's a one off cost.If you're not really smart about cars like I am, this is a no brainer, it's an amazing piece of kit and good value for money!
