How do these grip? Are they backed with Velcro?

you just put them down on a flat surface and put the workpiece on top they grip fairly well .

So would these sit on my wooden workbench and really hold a piece of timber sturdy enough for me to plane or use a router?

I think so but I haven’t used them like that. I’ve used them with a track saw but the track was clamped, too.
