Holy Grail
As someone who will no longer touch their hair with bleach or permanent hair dye, I had to find a semi permanent dye that still gave me some depth of color I wanted and lasted more than a few weeks. Pravana is it.Almost all semi permanent hair dyes (especially ones that show up on darker hair) are going to stain and be hard to work with. I’ve been using them for almost 8 years now and have it pretty much down to a science. I used to have to dye on a Friday because I’d have stains on my head, neck, ears, hands etc and couldn’t go to work the day after. I now can dye the night before and go to work the next day.I got a lot of these tips from other Amazon reviews years back and some were my own discoveries. Nonetheless I’m passing them to you. If you do not want to stain yourself or your bathroom, try the following…- Cover your sink and counter top with a trash bag or old towel. No matter how careful you are, a drip is probably going to get on it.- Same with the floor. Put something under you.- Put Vaseline or aquaphor (a lot of it) all around your neck, forehead, temples, ears, arms (unless you wear long sleeves) sides of your cheeks.. everywhere color could touch (it will touch your skin no matter how careful you are).- get a cheap hair dressers cover. I wrap mine so the open sides wrap towards the front of me and the closed section is in the back. Pull it up to your back hairline and fasten as best you can. If it slips down, the vaseline gives you protection.- Wear gloves when you apply the dye, rinse the dye and the first and sometimes second time you wash with shampoo. Same with when you brush it after the first rinse or two. It’s going to bleed and will stain when the dye is still really potent in your hair so wearing gloves until it’s dry will prevent staining.- Use a color applying brush. It doesn’t matter too much on which end you start with since there’s no developer. I find starting at the top gets less dye on my arms. If you get dye on your skin, you can remove with old rag or paper towel at the end. I get all the color on and then wipe everything off with an old rag or paper towel. There’s usually no staining since I used Vaseline but if there’s any left, soap and water in the shower will take the rest off. I usually have no staining when I get out after the first rinse.- I usually leave the color in overnight since my hair is so dark. You do not need to do this. It has never harmed my hair (I think it feels amazing after) and I personally feel I get better color this way. I wrap my hair in a Walmart bag and make sure it’s covering my neck and tie the two handles towards the front of my head. Sometimes I double bag. Never had stains on my pillow when I woke up.- If you have a clogged or slow draining tub, you will have massive staining first couple of rinses. Even if you don’t you will probably have some staining. If any color gets on the walls as you are rinsing, immediately take a cup of water and rinse it. It may or may not get it all off or you may see a hue of color depending on how much dye was there. I have a trick for any color left.- Immediately after getting out of the shower, wrap your hair in an old towel. It will stain the towel and any drops can stain your floor. Get all the water out you can so your hair isn’t dripping.- spray your tub the second you can! I use the Clorox bathroom cleaner with bleach. It comes right off. Regular bleach in water will get it off too if you fill up your tub and let it sit. But I found the spray is much easier. Spray and rinse or spray and wipe. Both work for me. You can never tell the tub was purple or blue afterwards. Also works if you get it on tile or sink. Careful though because sometimes a blob of the dye has gotten directly on my sink and even with bleach it still had some discoloration. That’s why I cover my entire counter now.- Also watch out for doors and walls! You may think you are father away than you are and brush up against it. Same when applying the color. Careful not to get drips on the wall or front of your sink. A magic eraser has worked for walls for me before but sometimes nothing got the color out depending on the wood.I know I seems like a lot but it’s worth it to have colored hair without the damage. My hair is so long now and finally doesn’t feel like straw. Pravana gives me the best color on non bleached darker hair and it lasts a good 2 months for me. All those steps above ensure I am NOT staining my skin and needing to scrub it off before work and that my bathroom stays dye free.

My experience
Update: I've come to realize this stuff is basically permanent. Over six weeks later, the color turned into a still bright but slightly muted version of the same bright purple. Perfectly within my range of acceptable. By this time it was time to bleach and re-dye it because my dark roots were showing.Seriously, this stuff is great.SHORT VERSION:Three days has been enough to convince me that this is the best stuff out there. I have had purple hair for a very long time, and I am a very active person, and yet even when it's fresh, this stuff does not run under extreme conditions, whereas every other dye brand I have tried does - even this unsealed vs. other brands sealed. Based on this early experience I expect it to last for a very longtime in comparison to others. If you want a vivid, unnatural hair color, long-term, don't play around with the consumer brands. This is what professionals use, and for very good reason. It stays in hair, yet comes out of most everything else (I would avoid getting it on fabric though!) fairly easily. However, seeing how well it's sticking to my hair, I doubt I could recommend it for short term use. The directions say it can be bleached out and dyed over to a medium to dark color, but I don't intend to try. I like my purple.LONG VERSION:So, I've had purple hair for a very long time (I even sometimes jokingly claim that it's natural). I've used very nearly every brand I've been able to find. I am also a very active person, and usually have a problem with dye bleeding when I sweat, so I figured trying out a professional brand might be wise - if it holds up to rock stars, it might work for me, right? So I bought it, it arrived in a timely fashion, and this has been my experience:Day 1:Applied the dye. The first thing I noticed about it is that it's a nice royal purple, not reddish like other dyes I've tried - a good thing in my book; this is exactly the color I'm always aiming for. It's applied with a bowl and brush, which I usually use anyway as it's much neater than most applicator bottles. It went on easy, and gets good coverage; my hair is short and about 1/3 of the tube was enough for my whole head. I probably even used more than I needed just out of habit, actually. The instructions say to leave it in for no more than 20 minutes or it may actually make it fade faster. I was skeptical of this, but followed the instructions to the best of my ability anyway (it took several minutes to "paint" all my hair so I couldn't be very precise); I will let you know just how well it works. After the 20 minutes were up, I stepped in the shower to rinse it off, and that's where this gets exciting. There is a reason this stuff says it's for professional use only, and it's not that it can be dangerous if used improperly - it's for the mess it can make without professional equipment to contain it!The first thing I noticed was that the water was much brighter than I expected for the amount of dye I used (which led to my suspicion that I may have used more than I really needed). The second thing I noticed was that the water dyed my skin. The third thing I noticed was that after about 0.5 seconds of contact with the dye-water, my entire shower was covered in purple streaks. Everything was purple. Everything. My entire body, my shower, everything that came into contact with the diluted form of this dye for just a matter of seconds.Though it came off easily enough with about half an hour of washing and scrubbing (incidentally, my bathroom looks cleaner now than it has in years, not sure if it's just from the intensity of the scrubbing or if I left some dye behind and the blue tone is canceling out the yellow stains that have set in over the years), the next time I use this I fully intend to rinse my hair out in the sink...and line it with plastic first. I strongly recommend having plenty of soap, toothpaste, bleach, and Mr. Clean Magic Erasers or knockoffs thereof on hand. Still, if this is what happened after half a second of contact with the diluted dye, I have high hopes for how well it will stay in my hair after 20 minutes of contact with the concentrated stuff! Now rinsed and dry, after having been applied to my hair , which was pink due to residual dye from the last time I colored it, it's still a fantastic royal purple, exactly my favorite shade. So far, everything's looking good!Day 2:Washed hair at night; water was clear, though a good amount of pigment came out with shampoo. Made no apparent difference in hair's overall color, though noticing a fantastic iridescence on just-conditioned hair that hasn't appeared with other dye brands. Tomorrow is my first day of training since dyeing my hair; this is the real test...Day 3:It is perhaps time to explain the kind of training I do on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I take a body conditioning class through my college, which is taught by a remarkable woman who coaches professional athletes as well as amateurs. My heart rate usually reaches 95% of my maximum safe heart rate, and I leave sweating so much that I look more like I've been swimming than running and lifting weights. The dye did not run.Every other brand of dye I have every used runs after this kind of training, at the very least for the first week. This stuff? Stayed in place; the closest it came to running was a small amount rubbing off on my forehead from my fringe (easily cleaned up with soap and water) - and I didn't even get a chance to seal it like I have with other brands!I believe this is enough evidence for me to deliver my semi-final verdict. I am fully convinced that this stuff is the best out there.

Doesn’t Stain Like Drugstore Brands
My hairstylist uses this brand and color on my balayage purple hair. I needed a touch up in some areas where the bleach (I have dark hair so these areas looked orange) was showing through a bit, like on my roots, so when I found this on Amazon for so cheap, I snatched it up in order to save a costly trip to the salon. Because this is professional salon grade hair dye, I was expecting the dye to be left everywhere and stain my tub horribly, but I was pleasantly surprised. I put Aquaphor around my scalp on my face and on my ears before dying and was fine doing that. I rinsed my hair with cold water in the tub and there was a very light tint of purple on the very bottom but that disappeared with a few sprays of a cleaner that had bleach in it.Recently, I used up the rest of a drugstore brand dye I had, just to add more depth to my color (it’s a lighter purple than this chroma silk violet) and omg what a mess that was. The whole tub and shower walls were stained. I had to clean my scalp on my part with witch hazel to get the dye off, and two days later there’s still dye coming off on my hands if I brush my hair for more than 5 seconds or heat style it. I forgot how messy this brand was stain wise, so for all the people complaining about staining the the salon grade dye, maybe compare it to drugstore and you’ll see a big difference. This was a great buy and I’m so glad to have it on hand. A little goes a long way, too.

Nice, but not quiiite my shade
I ordered this on a friend's recommendation. It's nice, covers well, and doesn't bleed onto a pillowcase. I ordered the purple but it's just a touch too blue for me so I'll probably go back to my Manic Panic shade.

The best Haircolour I've ever had!
I absolutely love this colour. It looks awesome and it lasts very long. I bleach my hair before and then use the colour on the bleached hair. I also mixed it with pink once and it always looked awesome!Only critic is the price. When I bought it for the first time it cost under 25€ and now they want 40€ which is way to expensive even if the colour is that good. I bought it 5 times now and Im always happy with the results 👌🏻💜
