Some quirks but beautiful, feature-full 2-in-1 laptop
Really like the flatness. This is a very skinny laptop.Really like the keyboard. The backlit keys were not something I thought I would need but they are surprisingly useful so far.Beautiful display.Speakers were surprisingly loud and of high quality. *madly searches for the volume down button* :*)Tent mode is pretty awesome when you are lying in bed watching movies/videos.I am not missing the optical drive or the networking ports.Definitely fast enough to run my software (office software, SweetHome3D).The stylus is useful but not exact enough for fine drawing. Stick to a mouse for fine, detailed control.-The screen bounces backward slightly when you touch it when you are trying to "click" something. I think this characteristic would be pretty common to all touchscreens, though. It does make you touch the screen harder than you would like. Maybe that can be changed in the computer settings.-The black rim around the screen was disconcertingly large at first, but I then realized it was for holding the computer in tablet mode without clicking the screen.-I have been using a 11.6 inch netbook for the last few years and I was hoping this would be just as portable/pack-it-and-forget-it. It's not. It is a legit, almost full size laptop, even though it is skinny. Just be warned. You can still pack it in a backpack, but it won't be as small as you hope.-It is a MONSTER tablet in tablet mode. Almost freakishly so and heavy, to boot. I wouldn't use this casually as a tablet. It is much better in tent mode or laptop mode.-The heat vent/exhaust is very awkwardly placed. It is in the rear back of the laptop, facing down. This means that if I try to use this on a pillow or as a laptop in bed, it will immediately be covered by the material and start to overheat. I realize they did this so that in tablet mode, the vent is facing up, which allows the tablet to lay flat on a surface (like a bed) without overheating, but it does limit the laptop's placement options. In addition, there are no rubber feet to raise the bottom of the laptop off the surface. This may seem like a small detail, but without those raising feet, the laptop's rear vent is much easier to cover when it is on any surface. EDIT: I was wrong, there are rubber feet on the laptop's bottom. However, they are still so thin that I think my previous point about overheating still holds. In addition, I find when I hold the tablet in portrait mode, it is easy to cover the vent with my hand accidently. The touchpad is sensitive and if you are not used to it, will cause the mouse to jump when your finger is trying to click the lower corners for the left and right mouse buttons. It seems like this is because the sensing portion of the touchpad extends alllll the way down to the corners so that when you try and click the corners, the touchpad is still sensing your finger movements on the corner as a mouse movement. If they could remove the sensitivity for the touchpad corners, the touchpad would be fine. I hope to see this in future driver updates.Overall, very happy with this laptop so far. I intend on using it to design house plans with the 3d software and it seems adequate for that purpose so far. I am very happy that I bought this model, as the better display, better processor and better RAM should future-proof this laptop to some degree.

11-23 Waiting for exchange from Dell. 12-8 exchange received
FINAL UPDATE 12-9-14: Now that I've more time with the unit I thought I'd elaborate a little more. My initial review and past updates are still posted so there's no need to focus on the past. So here's looking forward: The screen, while beautiful, shows a streak when swiping the screen with your finger or stylus. I also own a 23" Lenovo all in one desktop touchscreen and there is no temporary streak that trails your finger. Maybe because the Lenovo screen is protected by a thick layer of glass. I don't know if this a future cause for concern. The left shift key is slightly out of position so I sometimes hear a click when the side of the key hits the cutout. Again, I don't know if this will be a future concern. The Windows app store is poor. I didn't expect to see a library as large as Apple or Google but there are several free apps from the others that Windows charges for. It sure makes me miss Amazon's free app of the day from the Amazon app store. Set up, connecting to the internet and and installing my printer was easy. The backlit keyboard rocks and so far I've been very impressed with the battery life. I can't wait to try playing a movie on an upcoming flight.UPDATE 12-8-14: Received an automated call from Dell this morning informing me my exchange has shipped. A few hours later FedEx was at my door with a replacement. Powered up the device and the fan is not constantly running. Good news. However I'm experiencing the twitchy track pad others have complained about. That wasn't an issue with the prior device. Not a huge deal for me because I don't intend to use it often.UPDATE 12-6-14: Dec 5 has come and gone and still no exchange. When I checked the status online it still states " Pending Dispatch Processing". When I double checked the warranty support history it states that on 11-22-14 I was handled by their Rapid Response Depot. Seriously? Makes me wonder how long things would take without the Rapid Response Depot. Now the question will be just how obsolete my new laptop will be before I receive it. No one to really blame here but myself. I should have kicked up some more $$$ and gotten a Lenovo Yoga or HP Envy 13x2. You get what you pay for.UPDATE 12-1-14: Replacement is still "Pending Dispatch Processing". I think that means they didn't get around to it yet. However I did receive a response from Dell this morning replying to an email I sent. They said that I'm looking at a Dec 5 ETA. It's Cyber Monday and if I find a better deal out there regardless of brand I'll take it and cancel this order. Sorry Dell, you need to move with more urgency. I ordered this item on 11-21, received it on 11-22 and opened a service ticket the same day. Nothing has happened to move this process along from 11-22 till present. This forces me to reduce my rating from 2 stars to 1 star because of Dell Customer Service. I thought about getting a replacement from Amazon but I don't know if I want Dell to profit. Time to see what ASUS and Lenovo have to offer. While setting up this laptop for the first time, I noticed after a few hours that the cooling fan never once shut off. I powered down the device and the fan shut off. Powered back up and the fan immediately kicked on. And it's not the quietest fan either.Since so many manufacturers are going "fan less", I thought it was odd for Dell to design a laptop who's fan never shuts off when powered on... So I called Dell Tech Support. The rep I spoke to said this is normal. I told them I find that hard to believe because unless they're using some kind of industrial grade fan, this fan will burn out prematurely. The rep then gives me this speech how he's been with Dell for 3 years and all Dells have always operated this way. I explained how the 5 yr old Dell I'm replacing doesn't have this issue nor have the other Dells I've been using for decades. He was so arrogant and wouldn't let me finish a thought. I gave up and asked to speak to a supervisor. He response was that his supervisor was on another call and unavailable. So I asked for another supervisor. He put me on hold for 45 minutes. While on hold I called into tech support from a different phone. Within minutes I got a different rep and I explained my situation and how the other rep addressed it. He apologized and looked into my problem. His response was the same, this is normal, so I reiterated the same. He then decided to walk me through a hardware diagnostic check. Sure enough when the cooling fan was tested all kinds of audible alarms and error codes were going off. Dell tech support confirmed I have a defective unit and is issuing a replacement.I will update my review and star rating if or when Dell delivers a replacement. They promised to email me a confirmation but I haven't seen one yet.
