Jonathan Green (10765) Black Beauty Fall Magic Grass Seed - Cool Season Lawn Seed (3 lb)

This was my first experience with Jonathan Green grass seed. The results were outstanding. The grass came in lush green and really dense. The seed started to germinate after about 7 days. I think I found my new "go to" seed. This seed isn't overly expensive and didn't contain coating which usually accounts for 1/2 of the weight. Make sure to use some straw or cover the seed with a THIN layer of soil to prevent feeding the birds.

Hands down the best seed I’ve ever used!! I finally found a seed that actually works! Had to put a net on my grass because wild rabbits and birds were digging up my grass, but once I figured it out the grass grew fantastic!

This is the best grass sed I have ever bought, I seeded it a week ago and it is already coming up thanks to a little co-operation from mother nature for providing a lot of sunshine!!! I highly recommend this seed because I live in upstate NY.

Grew quickly, healthy appearance

This is the first time I used a Jonathan Green product. I was not disappointed. Due to lack of rain, my tall fescue lawn was starting to get brown patches all over. At first I used a fungicide. Waited a few weeks to see if it would clear up--not completely. Then I rented a de-thatching machine. (This is a very important step.) Cleaned all the thatch up and using a seed spreader put down JG Black Beauty Fall Magic Grass Seed. Thick, dark green grass started to come up within a week. I waited about 5 weeks before I mowed the lawn. Very satisfied with outcome.

Started to grow within 5 days unlike Scotts

The seed arrived in good condition as far as packaging was concerned. My issue is that the label stated it was last tested in July of 2024 and it is now August 2025. This means it is not “fresh” seed and consequently, the germination rate will be reduced. I will be returning it and purchasing at a local garden center.

This grass seed is great, it germinates fast and it managed to sprout even though I have about 1.5 inches of mulch on top of the grass. I am using this grass seed for a really obscure purpose, for inter-cropping blueberries. The grass' roots provide iron to the blueberry plants, this is helpful for plant health because blueberries do not produce iron chelators on their own. It is quite impressive how quickly the grass sprouted, if I were to guess I would say it took about a week for germination. I will have to get some more of this product for my lawn this fall for over-seeding. I perused the reviews and noticed some folks looking for the breakdown of the seed in this mix.
