🕊️ Own a timeless piece of history and faith — before it’s gone!
This handmade clay pottery statue is a precise reproduction of the Edo period Fumi-e, used in 1629 Japan to identify Christians by forcing them to step on images of Jesus and Mary. Crafted by Japan’s only traditional Arita ware craftsman, it features a unique bronze-like finish on unglazed pottery, making it a rare collectible that embodies a poignant chapter of Japanese religious history.

Powerful piece of history, that should go on your home altar
I bought this as a Catholic who read Endo’s Silence. The work is historical fiction, and details the deep and ever-layered complexity between the priest, his people, and apostasy. If you are on the fence, I’d urge to to purchase, and place on your home altar. A piece of art made to torture Christian’s, now as a piece for meditation, contemplation, and prayer. I’d urge you too to pray for the souls of those who went through the 200+ years of persecution in Japan, including and especially those who stepped on the fumi-e—in particular, Fr. Ferreira. A perfect piece of art, beautifully made. The way the light hits the various angles is ideal for contemplation.

Interesting historical reproduction
A former student of mine studied the history of Japan, and shared the story with me of the fumi-e; that the shogunate in 1629, wishing to eradicate Christianity from their country, had these stones made to expose Christians. They were called stepping stones, and featured pictures of Jesus or Mary. People were made to step on these to prove they were not Christians. If they refused, they were tortured or put to death. This fumi-e reproduction is small (perhaps 3" x 5"), and has a hole at the top through which a jute-sort of rope is threaded. The back is hollowed out. The front looks as though it was created with a mold or press of some sort. It's pretty weighty. I'm not sure what it's made of, but I'm guessing that it's something like resin. The color is bronze, with various parts of the relief with a slightly lighter, faint goldish color. This fumi-e is of Mary, whose hands are in a prayerful pose. There are cherubs at each corner; I'm not sure if they're supposed to be Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, or random angelic creatures. Around Mary is a sort of halo effect, which is then surrounded by a twisted oval (maybe rope?).The fumi-e came in a rough but sturdy cardboard box. There was a yellow slip of paper in it which had Japanese writing on it; I'm imagining that it told the story of the fumi-e, as this came from the J A P A N \ M U S E U M. (I have no idea if this is correct, since I don't read Japanese.)It is a meaningful piece of art or history, even though it's heartrending.

Beautiful!
This is a beautiful piece of art! I love the bronze details. The lines are a shade darker than the rest to skillfully enhance the etching. It is perfect. It is a bit smaller than I thought it would be. The back has a rope to hang. It's a heavy, sturdy piece. It's high-quality and a great value.

Lacks detail, just looks like swirls
This product is a rectangular metal piece of artwork that contains much texture and line. It is very abstract but one can make out the image of Jesus and Mary, especially because that is what this piece is named after. Otherwise I don't know if I would have seen it.This product is a small piece of art to hang on a wall, it comes with a small loop of twine on top for hanging it on a nail. It is religious in nature but non-traditional. The contours and lines of the metal sculpture are interesting in and of themselves, but the recessed creases look like they are collecting dust very quickly. The high level relief looks good and shiny with a nice brass finish, but the deep grooves are just kind of dirty.Overall I will definitely be hanging this up as a conversation piece in a room with dozens of other things. I was disappointed; I hoped for something that was a little more discernible and maybe a little more traditional.

What I received was different than what is shown on the site
The size of the object is quite small…the size of a baseball card, a smart phone, or an electrical wall plate. The size limits where the object can be placed to look attractive. The face of the object is different than what is shown on the site…neither good or bad…just different. It comes with a fabric hanger so it can be hung on a wall. It does not come with a stand. Without a stand, it has to lay flat on an end table or perhaps on a desktop. A stand would have to be quite small for this object to look proportional with the stand. It is more of a knickknack item than a centerpiece item.

Excellent Quality Replica
The media could not be loaded. The Virgin Mother/Single Mother icon is universal in art as the glory of being born endlessly fascinates us.The quality the replica is excellent. The sisal rope hanger is the perfect accent.

Beautiful, but could use a hanging hook
I love this piece. It looks exactly like the product photo. It's heavy and clearly high-quality. The only thing missing is a hanging hook. It comes with the nice stand, but I'd really like to be able to hang it on the wall. The backside is indented, but the inside slopes towards the interior, so there's no way to hook it and there's no mounting hole either. I think I might break it if I tried to drill a hook into it, so I'll just have to use it with the stand. It looks great.
