A Safe Place for Rufus

A nice story explaining some of the difficulties faced by Rufus ...
A nice story explaining some of the difficulties faced by Rufus as he adjusts to his new home. I particularly like the way his bad memories are personified in an abstract and interesting way that my child seemed to understand was symbolic. There is a handy parents guide included to help with discussions around the themes, as obviously some topics could be distressing or sensitive to broach with children. The only little niggle I have is that the previous (abusive) family were said to have shouted at him. And you know, we all shout a bit sometimes don't we? So it doesn't necessarily make a home abusive if there is occasional shouting! I think there could have been more things to show how poorly treated he had been, but I guess the author wanted to leave that vague so his story could be more relatable to children from a variety of backgrounds. On the whole, a lovely book telling of the struggles adopted children (and pets) can face in their new homes, in a non-confrontational way with beautiful illustrations, and it is a favourite in our house.

Really useful to help explain Foster and Adoption
Really useful to help explain Foster and Adoption. Used to explain to my nephew about my forthcoming adoption. Helped him to understand a little more with added explanations from myself and his Mum.
