I bought this book in paperback from a secondhand bookshop decades ago and have read it several times with equal enjoyment. Unsurprisingly my copy ultimately became yellowed, dogeared and finally disintegrated. Hard as I looked, I could not find a replacement, so was delighted to find a kindle version on Amazon and at a very affordable price. Not going to spoil your read by re-writing the plot here. Suffice to say that Raucher's narrative is colourful, slick, humourous, tragic, the characters are alive, the 1950s the perfect backdrop for a very enjoyable read. Hope you enjoy the book as much as I have.

one of the best books ever
I first read this book about 25 years ago and have been trying for years to get another copy. It didn't have quite the same impact as an older reader but is still a fantastic book and I intend to read it again and again. It brings back memories of youth, of being young and in love etc. I would also recommend Ode to Billy Joe and Summer of 42 if you liked this one.

Great romance
The story is sad, heartfelt and romantic, about a young couple chasing their dreams, and losing each other. It's racy, and written with a very witty, spontaneous humor.

surprisingly good read...
this book was recommended by a friend - it takes place primarily during the 40's and is a love story of misfortune and missed opportunities, but the main characters, separated by years and misunderstandings, eventually get their respective acts together - what better than a happy ending (now that I've spoiled it for everyone!)?

Lovely story
Such a tender love story; heartbreaking in spots, but in the vein of Summer of 42...I loved it when it first came out and it's one of the classics, in my opinion.

Read it
Favorite book. Keep having to buy copies, when I let someone read it, I don't get my book back!!

One of my favorites
This book is not in print anymore, so I was happy to find it on Amazon. By the same author as "Summer of 42" and I first read this in my "youth". Is filled with great sarcastic wit - will make you laugh and then make you cry so have the tissues close at hand.
