I am tech literate and a smart home enthusiast, but I didn't want to spend $5000 on the Drop smart water softener system. I also didn't want to periodically lift the lid on the salt bin. I think this item really works for a retrofit application. It was also a lot smaller than I thought! The install was easy with just two spots to drill. I recommend drilling a pilot hole first with a smaller drill bit before you drill the actual size hole you need for the threaded mount and the microUSB cord. There are two ways to set up the device on your wifi - 1) using the wizard in the app, and 2) directly connecting to the device's SSID it transmits after you first turn it on. I recommend starting with #1, but I ended up using #2. Once I connected the sensor to wifi, I set up my EZsalt account, added the sensor, and everything was working. I added my sensor to the salt bin when the salt level was down to the water. This allowed me to see how the sensor would calculate the fill % down to the water line, where it reads the water line as the salt level (the salt was actually below the water line). Then I filled up my entire salt bin to just below the sensor on the underside of the lid, and the reading was 86%, which is to be expected because of the water line. I then used the dynamic offset feature in the online portal to "top up" the reading to 100% because I consider the bin 100% filled for how much salt I added. The real test for this device will be if I receive a SMS and email notification in the coming months. So far, so good!

The features could be a little more work and gives false alerts. Overall though it seems to help let us know the levels.

This is pretty straightforward to install. You just drill a small hole in the lid of your salt tank and put the unit in there. Easy set up with the app

The ezsalt comes with tasmota installed which allows you to point it to home assistant's MQTT broker instead of theirs. I had to use their app to configure it to connect to my wifi, however once connected you can connect to the device using a browser, it's very easy to configure. Once you do that, you'll need to create a virtual sensor to convert the values it sends because it tells MQTT that it measures in mm but sends cm. This results in a 10x larger number from the sensor than expected. I also converted from the distance to the salt to the salt level by taking the total depth of my tank and subtracting the sensor measurement. It was not difficult once I knew what to do.
