Great rum fashioned
I am a massive fan of a good rum fashioned and this rum definitely stands out in this regard. It has enough backbone because of the above average ABV and a great flavour profile. By this I mean that you can mix it with certain syrups / bitters and it will still taste amazing. Great value for money if you're looking for a strong rum for rum fashioned and mai tai.

Funky
An amazing rum from Jamaica, funk banana notes and a kick from the slight overproof. My new Mai Tai base rum..

Punchy, flavoursome rum which will make you merry (drink with care)
I bought this after finding a Rum Negroni recipe online and this was the recommended rum (Negroni needs something to stand up to the Antica and Campari). It works beautifully but, as another reviewer said, it sneaks up on you - you've been warned.Neat this is powerful but with quite frankly delicious - I was picking up banana bread, but I'm not a connoisseur.Thoroughly recommend

Perfect with Cocktails, Not Neat -
I consider myself a true cocktail aficionado. Each Saturday I have a cocktail hour (or two) with friends and family visiting. The favourites are Trader Vic's style cocktails and we try and get them near enough to the original taste. My favourite cocktails are Zombie, Mojito, Hurricane, and Mai Tai. I bought this rum to add to a Zombie recipe and it worked really well.I have tried Smith & Cross Rum neat with just a couple of rocks and wasn't that impressed with the intense taste. I then tried it with a little coke (coca cola), rocks and a cigar and it was perfect. At 57% proof, It will knock your socks off in a pleasant way!Cheers!

Don't be put-off by the ABV!
For me, this is a really great sipping rum where the flavours come through beautifully after the initial "burn" subsides. I can easily make a 'double' last 3 hours. But beware, 57% ABV can sneak-up on you fairly quickly!

Not ideal. Too sweet.
Coming at this from a whisky drinkers perspective, despite it being supposedly unadulterated, and unchillfiltered, it still comes across as very sickly sweet. I have tried other sipping rums that are more savoury; so if you aren't partial to the sweetness, then bear this in mind and discount it as an option.

Find Your Own Sweet Spot
Like Wray & Nephew's overproof offering, Smith & Cross is a 57% proof true original. It's marginally smoother than W&N thanks to a light ageing, but it'll still make your eyes water drunk neat. People can love or hate this stuff because of its high ester/funk/'hogo' level which some people are just genetically disposed to find repellent (if you don't like strong, 'gamey' or fermented flavours you might be one of those people). Thankfully I don't have this disposition at all, I like those flavours and I love this stuff. Even so it's probably not a rum you're going to be knocking back a ton straight (please don't) and even mixed, less is going to be more.

Unbelievable flavour
Smells like rotting bananas, but in a good way! Absolutely lovely flavour, easy to sip and, at navy strength, it’ll knock your socks off too!
