After trying the cheapest brand (begins with a V), which arrived DOA and could not be repaired, this brand did work quite well. Able to trace underground irrigation lines under about 8" gravel and wet clay. But if you also need to trace buried wires, live or unenergized, or metal pipes, there is a really great competitive product for about twice the price. Since you have to open the irrigation pipe at some points to insert this tracer, you can insert a metal fish tape and use a wire tracer for deeper detection and smart annunciation to eliminate hum.

I used this to locate where a clogged drainage pipe for my gutters/sumps were coming out. Turns out, they were about 50 feet long and buried ends.Very simple. Charge it up, feed it down the pipe, and sweep.The pipe was buried about 2 feet deep, this still picked it up. Saved me a fortune in paying a professional to come out and do it. Cannot fault it.

This does kind of sense where the cable is. The problem is I can't tell what is noise and what is sensor. The scanner was responding to the cable with the cable turned off, and even with everything turned on, it looked like I was getting noise from just regular house outlets.For context, I was trying to trace a sewer line from the main stack of my house to the city sewer line in the street. I got a general idea, but nothing I felt confident enough to dig for.

Received this detector and it was exactly as described. Came well packaged and seems very durable. We were able to follow the path of the probe through the wall. We did not have an obstruction but was able to detect the path as we feed the probe through the drain. Would recommend to anyone looking to self-diagnose pipe obstructions.

So it does work but I needed it to find landscaping drain in the yard from the gutters. Maybe they were too deep because I couldn’t pick up a signal. If it’s 3-4 inches away it will work
