Great scanner with pro features — minor setup issue
The ThinkCar 689 OBD2 scanner is a powerful and reliable diagnostic tool. The ease of use is excellent, even for someone who isn’t a pro technician. Navigation is straightforward, and the interface is clean. It picked up codes quickly and provided clear data across multiple systems. I did run into a minor issue during the update process and had to reset the system once, but after that, everything worked perfectly. If you’re familiar with basic tech setup, it shouldn’t be a problem. The build quality feels solid, and it seems tough enough for daily shop use or to live in a toolbox. While it is a bit pricey, I honestly think it’s worth the investment — whether you’re a professional or a backyard mechanic. You’re getting deep diagnostics and solid performance without needing dealership-level gear. ⸻ Q&A: Q: Is this scanner easy to use for beginners or just pros? A: It’s user-friendly enough for beginners. The menu system is clean, and scanning is straightforward. Q: Did you experience any issues during setup or updates? A: Yes, the update glitched once and I had to reset it. After that, no issues at all. Q: Is it worth the higher price tag? A: Yes — it’s packed with features, reads a wide range of systems, and feels built to last.

Very good Deal
Im pretty familiar with scanners....i went through quite a bit of features and to get myself familiarized where to go to get what i want. there is a Demo car that gives quite a bit of details too. so far so good. the new updates lets you put a different screen shot on the opening page. in stead of that monkey, you can instal your own pic. The graphing section will be good to do a quick diagnose of certain glitches but will need indepth tools to see whats going on like a pico scope. but for the price, cant beat it. my snap on Solos Edge is still usful up to 2020. updates are over 1500. no way. it took me 2 months to decide on which scanner to get, i looked at a lot of em. this is the best deal out there for the features. time will tell. update: the system i wanted takes time to load, if you back out for any reason, it starts over again. its a learnig curve like anything. it'll be good for certain things.

Good scanner
So far I really enjoy my scanner. It is quite advanced so there is a bit of a learning curve. The scanner does try to explain some options. Its just the manufacturer and tech language that you gotta learn. Thank God for you tube.....

ITS A $400 BRICK
DO NOT BUY THIS SCANNER! DO NOT BUY THIS SCANNER! DO NOT BUY THIS SCANNER! I have been in the market for a decent bidirectional scanner since I do all my own mechanic work and recently started taking in a lot of work for others. I started with the other very popular DIYer brand but didnt like that I couldn't do basic ECU Coding on my truck (which I can do with a phone app) and it was only 2 years of free updates which the company wouldnt tell me if updates would still be usable after the "expiration date". I seen lots of reviews for this scanner, had all features I wanted, so I decided to try it. The OS was confusing to use at first. No login, no expiration dates on updates, etc. This scanner could actually change SOME settings within my truck but not even the basic ones I can program with my phone app. Now comes the problems... Lets start with the connector on the scannwr not being able to screw in properly or regularly. Wire had to be pulled out and turned to line up one screw so it would thread in. Scanner OS would constantly crash or fault. No reasoning, sometimes whole unit would restart, sometimes it would just tell me it failed, etc. The English on this device is not good so its very confusing trying to figure out what to do or what happened. When I finally did what I think it wanted me to do, "Firmware Fix", it worked slightly better, completely changed my interface layout which was much better than original, but still random crashes. When trying to record live data while on a drive to diagnose one of my cars with a random issue, scanner restarted and I lost it all. It then froze mid idle relearn on a vehicle. No warning, no way to stop it, just frozen. Luckily vehicle was able to correct once I unplugged scanner. Was compatible with all the vehicles I connected to but features with really vary by make and model. For example, NISSAN has so a bunch of additional options which actually make everything slower when trying to do basic diagnostic on an old basic Sentra. The final straw was when I had it hooked up to my car, I walked to look under the hood, came back and screen was off. Went to try to turn it on, nothing. THE UNIT IS COMPLETELY DEAD. Luckily im still within return window because good luck getting help when the hardware fails. I was told contact seller if within warranty period but I see absolutely nothing regarding a hardware warranty. Meanwhile, I lost all the data I had saved to it this week, a lot of which was crucial to diagnosing 2 separate vehicles ive been spending all week working on. Unless you like to throw money away, fight OS bugs and crashes, and gamble on when the hardware is just going to completely fail on you, DO NOT BUY THIS. "Lifetime Updates" because the hardware isnt going to last that long.

Really brilliant diagnostic kit. East to plug and play. Options to identify car make and model. Brought up old cleared faults as well as new faults linked to the engine management light that annoyingly appeared on our Mercedes. Worked out quickly what it was linked to, save a very expensive garage trip. I havent had much comparison to alternative products but I was very pleased at the user friendly interface and the design and build of the device itself. Comes in a nice carry case too

Since receiving I have only tested basic features like scanning for error codes on a Volvo EX30, Fiat 500 and BMW F30 which this performed fine on all 3. It also allowed me to change parameters and code features like disabling stop start. Then out of no where my F30 kept going into limp mode and I used this to attempt to diagnose the issue. Codes were pointing to a fuel pump issue but it was a rather generic code (the fault of BMW not the scanner) but I was then able to monitor the live readings of the HPFP and it was clear that was at fault. Let my garage know and they confirmed it and so saved me a diagnostics charge. A really brilliant tool for those who are repairing cars as a hobby/living.
