MVC1 no longer uses a pot with an audio taper
This product is a potentiometer (pot) with some leads attached and is used to control the volume of 45 ohm intercom speakers. The problem with this unit is the potentiometer. The original M&S intercom system that was installed in my home 20+ years ago used a volume control with the same model number (MVC1) but used a pot with with an audio taper. An audio taper accounts for the fact that ear's response to sound is logarithmic and not linear. Using a pot with an audio taper allows for smooth adjustment of the volume over the entire range. But this replacement unit does not use a pot with an audio taper as my original. It uses a pot with a linear taper which means the adjustment is much less smooth as compared to the older version. Keep this in mind since 500 ohm pots with a linear taper are cheap and easy to find. You can simply replace the pot in an older unit yourself with a 500 ohm linear taper pot, if the original pot has worn out. The only reason I bought this new MVC1 unit is in thinking it used a pot with an audio taper, like my original, but it uses one with a linear taper.. I verified this by measuring the resistance of the new unit with a DVM and found it has a linear taper: equal angle changes give the same change in resistance. One of my older units that is still in good working order measured using the same DVM showed it indeed has an audio taper. Don't buy if you expect to get a pot with an audio taper.
