Makita 198486-1 Long Handle Attachment

This (Makita 198486-1 Long Handle Attachment) is a good addition to the Makita grass shear tool. I am using it on the Makita XMU05Z shear and it fits perfectly, even though it is designed for the XMU04Z shear. I use it for trimming grass at the edge of a first step facing made of white plastic "wood". It is not perfect for this application, but it does work OK. I needed something other than a string trimmer, which puts gouges in the plastic "wood" step facing. I bought the smallest Makita battery - 2.0Ah - to go with the shear, as I read that the long handle’s wheels are small and the battery often bumps against the ground when using. I bought this Makita extended handle to allow use of the shear while standing up, instead of crouching. This Makita extended handle works well on the XMU05Z shear, even though the handle specs only state that it is compatible with the XMU04Z. Due to the small wheel size, the small battery still bumps on the ground most of the time unless the entire tool and handle are picked up in the air while using. Even with this issue, I am happy with the shear and this handle. The blades are very sharp and the motor is sufficiently powerful to clip all grass/weeds that it encounters on my lawn. Battery life using the shear has been good so far. This long handle attachment is pricey, as are most Makita items. But it saves a lot of bending and crouching while using the shear.

did nothing to make trimming around the tree farm easier

I like the idea of the long handle which was a prerequisite to getting a clipper. I am glad I have it but Makita, as a premier cordless tool company really the missed the mark here. Everything works but not as well as it should. Attachment of the handle to the trimmer is an awkward operation so I just leave the trimmer hooked up to it rather than having it available to use without the handle. It is hard to keep the on switch engaged, have to keep on turning the trimmer baack on again which is not a smooth working action. The wheels are too small to smoothly roll over anything but paving and they cause the battery to drag in the dirt. Lastly for what it is and how poorly it delivers its function, the price is way too high. I almost did not buy a Makita due to the poor reviews on this handle and I have to agree. I sacrificed because I already had Makita batteries/chargers and I wanted the quality of Makita tools. Still happy I have this, but Makita missed the target here. They settled for it will get by instead of excellence - shame on them! If you are going to charge a premium price, you need to deliver a premium product which means premium functionality

Used it once kind of useless the wheels are too small hard to push it gets stuck all the time and the trimmer is dragging on the ground most of the time it’s too low didn’t work well at all waste of money I should’ve returned it I like Makita I have a lot good tools from them but this one is a fail

This handle worked well. I did not use the wheels at all; rather, I used two hands to hold the trimmer at the height I wanted. It works great and prevents damage to the fence from a string weed whacker. This results in a 6-inch wide strip that I can mow up to. EASY PEASY! I can trim both sides of my 160 foot long fence 2-3 times before I need to recharge the battery.

This a very handy Makita tool. Attach your trimmer to end. You can articulate the trimmer to edge trim grass along a sidewalk. Hold the trimmer to a height to get to hard reach places. Very useful with my yard work when comes time to work. Great price, delivered fast. Thanks

I bought this to avoid having to lean down to edge my sidewalk but since its an aggregate style concrete it bounces too much to make a steady line.
