Watermark (FSG Classics)

I really love the idea that the subject reveals itself to the explorer to the extent of capacities of the explorer. This is true with all books or life. In this book, there are a lot of such purely decorative words, but actually there is also a very deep understanding of important matters. Like beauty. But he will never say anything explicitly, same as Nabokov, all the complex things will be buried behind 1000 layers like a contraband. This is my thought about watermark

The book arrived with wonderful delicate wrapping reflecting it’s quality all be it used.

This is a cute little book on the impressions of Venice in Winter by Brodsky. Given that the beauty of Venice in Winter is extraordinary, I expected more insights from an accomplished poet like Brodsky. Briefly, you learn more about Brodsky than about Venice (Winter or Summer).. Maybe I have been annoyed by some sloppiness in the writing: for Brodsky, all churches in Venice are cathedrals (there can be only one cathedral per town), and his comment that time cannot have beauty is strange (I can see Proust turning over in his tomb, rightfully so, his whole Recherches is about the beauty of time). And his attack on Ezra Pound is unnecessary. Ezra Pound is a tragic figure, and his Fascist propaganda in WWII was treason, with no excuses. But it simply does not belong in Venice in Winter, he really went out of his way to attack Ezra Pound. Excusatio non petita, accusatio manifesta?

It is a dark comedy and enjoyed the Dustin Hoffman

I bought my first copy of this in Venice while visiting there in September. Had not heard of it before but recommended by an Italian friend. Lovely book if you love Venice as I do. This one was a gift for another Venice fan and surely will buy more for others.

Excellent little "tome". It really made Venice come alive when I was there. I have recommended this to many and all have loved it. Prose form a great poet.....

This is one of the best books I've ever read. No, really. I've bought at least five copies that I've given to my closest friends, and the universal reaction was a) this is amazing and b) why have I never heard about this before?Such a pleasure to read, and read, and read over and over again.

Magnificent

「１ドルが８７０リラ、僕は３２歳、地球は今より２０億人軽かった」という言葉で、本書は始まる。著者はノーベル賞詩人ジョセフ＝ブロツキー。彼にとって英語は母国語ではない。しかしそのシンプルな英語は、読者を一気に彼の世界に引きこむ。でもその世界は、彼の英語ほどシンプルで明快な世界ではない。読むには覚悟がいるかもしれない。これはヴェネチアの観光案内でも歴史学習の書でもない。かといって芸術案内でも哲学書でもない。旅行記でも自伝でもない。４８の短い章を読み終えた時、この詩人のヴェネチアがはっきりと立ち上がる。そして私も一度はヴェネチアに行っておこうと思うかもしれない。すべての時間が埃のように堆積し永遠に残っている街。一陣の風が吹けば過去が舞い上がり、私たちは、演奏会で奏者の楽譜をめくるストランビンスキーを目撃し、パステルナークに出会い、居酒屋ではオーデンが友人と語り合う姿を見る。しかしこれはセンチメンタルな本ではない。スーザン＝ソンタグとのエピソードが語られ、東京ローズが引用され、好きな作家として芥川龍之介が紹介される。著者は自分の過去の不幸を「私は食べるために感情生活を売り物にしない」とカットする。詩人の対象はあらゆるものに向かう。ゴンドラ料金の高さに怒り、エセ文化人を嘆き、美女の裏切りを放免したりもする。また彼の視線は、物の最深部の元素にまで到達し、すべてを解体しヴェネチアの埃に同化させる。ヴェネチアの埃は時間であると彼はいう。彼は１７年間、毎年冬のヴェネチアを訪れる。しかし彼のヴェネチア再訪は、必ずしも楽しいものではない。お金も時間もかかる。イタリア語が上達するわけでもない。地元に根付くこともなく、いつまでも異邦人だと彼は嘆く。にもかかわらず彼は律義にヴェネチアに戻ってくる。いったい何故なのか。ブロツキーは、旧ソ連政府に「寄生詩人」の烙印を押され５年の刑をうける。サルトルやオーデンの嘆願で釈放されるが、３２歳の時、国外追放される。疲れと不安のうちに、冬のヴェネチア駅に降り立った彼は、自分の自由を実感し圧倒的な幸福感に打たれる。諧謔なブロツキーが手放しで喜びをしめす唯一のシーンである。彼が繰り返しヴェネチアに戻ったのは、ヴェネチアの美を享受するためだけではない。若き日のこの至福の一瞬に再会するためだと、私は想像する。ヴェネチアには３２歳の幸福な自分が間違いなく存在する、そういう場所なのだから。そしてもしかしたら、今の自分と比較してみることもあったろうか。WATERMARK 水位標という美しい書名に、自分の立ち位置を測るマークという意味を、私は勝手に加えている。
