They knew three chords if they were lucky. But this band remains for many the essence of garage rock, thanks to a certain joie de vivre best expressed by the song titles on these, their first two albums: Tripmaker; Mr. Farmer; Up in Her Room (Sky Saxon's 14-minute ode to free love); Pushin' Too Hard , and more. Wow.

Roots
All music has its roots and I've only just discovered mine with this brilliant and timeless gem , I can see so many of the late 70's punk bands and the subsequent wave of Sonic Youth , Big Black and even Britpop where the Seeds influence really reaped it's legacy .

Jussst Add Water
It's difficult to flag up key songs on this album, as they're all strong; if you like one of these two-minute two chord punk classics, you'll like 'em all. Pushin' Too Hard, Can't Seem To Make You Mine, they just keep coming... My fave is Fallin' in Love, with a fab electric piano solo; one to be proud of.Whilst garage bands were ten-a-penny in the mid 60s, somehow the Seeds found a sound that they made their own. It's partly Sky Saxon's snotty vocals, walls of fuzztone guitar and fabulous tinkly electric piano, but it's also the songs' structures and repetitive trancey riffs.Play Loud!

Info on the vinyl
There are two vinyl releases for this record. There is a picture disc and (I am assuming) a normal black LP. If the page you are viewing has a round picture for the product image then that is the picture disc. Also both vinyl releases only contain the first album; regardless of the fact that Amazon lists 19 tracks on the web page, the vinyl only has 12. I was a little disappointed when my record came; it was the picture disc, and I generally stay away from them because of the slightly inferior sound quality. There is an audible "whoosh" sound between tracks that all pic discs have. That aside, I am pleasantly surprised by the sound. I was expecting a grungy flat sound. Other reviewers mention that a similar CD release as this goes back to an impure master. Not so here, the sound is alive; however the disc is in fact stereo. I wish it were mono, but I don't think the mono "Seeds" is available on the market; unless, of course, you want to shell out the cash, and can find an original. All in all, I will keep the picture disc because I doubt the sound difference is worth getting Amazon to switch it. I have to admit; it's nice watching the band photo rotate around my table.

Good album!
Jsut what i was looking for! Bought this for "pushin too hard" but loved it so much more for all the other songs. This is one of those instances when i bought the album for the "popular" song and realized all the other songs were better.

A GREAT ALBUM!!!!
From start to finish The Seeds first album is a great piece of rock and roll. Sky Saxon writes and delivers great songs that stick in your head and stay there. Simple yet fantastic rock n roll that some have said pre-dated punk music and laid the path for things to start in that vein 10 years later. I love every song on this release as would any true rock fan. If you are curious about The Seeds and want a listen this is the album to start with........if you're already a fan, you know this and already have it!!!!

" many other great tunes. one of my guilty pleasures
one of the original garage bands. back in the day, most rock groups you'd see at the "Y" or farm bureau dance on friday night did a version of "pushin too hard." many other great tunes. one of my guilty pleasures.

Helps You To Have The Best Trip Possible
Back in the 60s everyone knew that the secret of going on a mind-expanding trip was to have the best set and setting for your experience. Obviously, living in a righteous pad with a few dozen male and female roommates was a groove and a gas.But what if you were a progressive head yourself, but there was no one else around to tell you how to expand your consciousness? That is why Sky Saxon and the Seeds came out with this guide to help you blow your mind no matter what kind of bring-down scene you are in.Whether it is the admiring portrait of your supplier in "Tripmaker" or the yearning to go back to the land in "Mr. Farmer," chief Seed Sky Saxon kindly helps you avoid "pushing too hard" on somebody else's groove instead of on your own.Yes, sings Sky, sometimes it seems like there is "No Escape" and "It's A Hard Life," but you can always "Just Let Go" "Up In Her Room" and tell the straights "Nobody Spoil My Fun."It's the best way to avoid bad trips.Sure, a lot of the songs sound like "Pushing Too Hard" sideways, especially "No Escape," but if you are down with where the Seeds' heads were at you won't notice or care. This album also makes a groovy gift for those who were not around in the 60s and so could not catch these vibes when they first went down.I am trying to turn on my 10 and 12 year old nephews to Sky's bag but my brother is interfering. If only he would listen to what Sky Saxon is telling us on this album. Then my brother would flash where it's all at and he would understand.

so-so
Unless you are old enough to remember seeing these guys perform live...as I did.....you probably wont be impressed with the quality of the recordings or the musicianship...these guys are "garage band" at best...They were ok in concert....just your average garage band who had a hit record...The hit "Pushin too hard"...is the high point of the cd....the rest of stuff is mere filler....Back then...same as now...there was a reason why bands like this never achieved superstar status...they lack that magical charisma to lock you in.
