Product Description Hori Smoku Sailor Jerry is a feature length documentary exploring the roots of American tattooing through the life of its most iconoclastic figure, Norman Sailor Jerry Collins. Considered by many the foremost tattoo artist of all time, Collins is the father of modern day tattooing, whose uncompromising lifestyle and larger than life persona made him an American legend. Through rare interviews, photographs and hours of archival footage, Hori Smoku Sailor Jerry: The Life and Times of Norman Keith Collins, explores the past, present and future of the global tattooing phenomenon. Based in Honolulu for most of his career, Sailor Jerry would come to symbolize the masculine ethos of a time when thousands of enlisted men were embanked in Hawaii, during World War II. Miles from home, ready to die, and fueled by devil-may care attitudes, these men went on shore leave with a single purpose in mind: to get Stewed, Screwed and Tattooed. Review An eye-popping, spit 'n gristle documentary...forever fascinating, outlaw-cool, and way more than skin deep. --Marc Savlov, Austin ChronicleTranscendentally salty but always thoughtful...wildly entertaining! --Matt Prigge, Philadelphia WeeklyThere are few more entertaining films this year than this enthralling look at the origins of modern tattooing. --Dan Buskirk, Phawker

great stuff
Combine this DVD with Ed Hardy's book with the letters that Jerry wrote to Hardy, and you've got a tremendous insight into one of the MAJOR tattoo artists who brought tattooing into the modern age... Jerry was a mentor to two of the others who also had great influence in changing the world of tattoo into what it is today-- Ed Hardy and Mike Malone, not to mention my own personal hero of the art, Zeke Owen. This is a video of interviews with people who knew Jerry or at least know a lot about him--- all the aforementioned speak at length ( although I wish there was more from Zeke) combined with visuals that are available from numerous sources, including the book mentioned. Some great stories and info about the times and Jerry's life, including a recording of his voice from his radio show. I only wish there could have been interviews with Jerry himself, but none exist--- He would would have told them to go f--k themselves! Well worth the money.

Worth the wait
I first saw this documentary in Austin at the Ritz on 6th, a beautiful way to experience this film. When it finally came out on DVD, I was one of the first in line. This goes through the life and times of "Sailor" Jerry Collins, one of the original legends in the tattoo industry famous for his approach to tattooing, his flash, his undeniable sense of humor, and unification of an American traditional approach to tattooing with the supportive elements and subject matter of Japanese tattooing. This story is largely told through interviews with Mike Malone, Eddie Funk, Don "Ed" Hardy, and Lyle Tuttle. This is well-made and worth the watch for any tattooist, tattoo enthusiast, apprentice, or anyone who wants a slice of tattoo history as told by the some of the folks who helped make that history.

Sailor Jerry,
A fun look at the rough and tumble world of tattooing before the modern era. Jerry started to change the art and explore it's possibilities.I thought the addition of Crazy Eddie was unnecessary, he added nothing to the story.

Crass, vulgar and beautiful!
Like as many things go, if you're pre-disposed to hating tattoos this film will fulfill your expectations. However if you know even a little tattoo history, you will be over the moon at the story-telling about NK "Salior Jerry" Collins,. Crazy Eddie is just a riot; surly lovable old farts (and some young ones too,Some rich art-school film peep; more docu's on tattooers. We need 'em! (and will buy them, as well as DL them!)

*Scam* Selling incorrectly labeled burnt copies of movies.
I wish I could post less than one star for this. The documentary is amazing, and was extremely excited when I ordered it for Christmas to give it to my wife as a gift. What I was sent was an obviously burnt copy of the movie, packaging and the disc looked correct, but when I went to play the movie some d-rated movie called “Candy Apple” was on the disk instead. What a joke, and a scam.
