Constantly crashes despite being supposedly compatible with Mac.
I originally bought this external hard drive last August to partition so it could be used for Time Machine and as additional storage for my MacBook Pro. I read internet reviews and 'Best Of' lists, but unfortunately did not read any Amazon reviews. Looking back now, the average score is poor, and there are loads of 1 star reviews. Initially it seemed to work fine, but within a week I had problems with it crashing my Mac or not mounting/unmounting properly. I didn't really use it much over this time so I put up with it, but after having it for around 10 months I started to use it more and it became almost impossible to do basic things. Amazon were very helpful and replaced the drive with another one of the same model, but again I started to have there same problems within a week so I returned it and bought a different external HDD. I would avoid this if you are using it with a Mac, even though it is supposedly compatible (and Apple used to sell these and still do sell other LaCie external HDDs) it did not work at all well.

Back up
This HDD is not the fastest, but it's also not the most expensive. I like the raised protective edges which give me confidence that this won't be destroyed by a knock by my cat as it clambers over my PS5 when it goes prowling for spiders on a night time. This is plugged into my PS5 as storage for PS4 games and it's worked flawlessly now for 2 years. Before that it was plugged into my PS4. I can't complain but the read/write speeds when using my PC are not as good as what I get with my Seagate HDD. The Seagate was not that much more expensive. For use as a back up device I recommend this, but if you are regularly transferring files then you may want a faster option. Also, LaCie has a brand hasn't let me down, however it hasn't yet "earned" the level of trust I have with Seagate and Kingston, plus obviously Sandisk. I have a project starting soon which will require storage of very important data and I'll be looking at brands I have solid trust in for that.

Light and secure
Typically LaCie: compact, light, tough, and easy to set up. The hardware encryption provides peace of mind.

Versatile
I have used this on my fast gaming laptop (Windows 10) without any issues. I have also used it on my iMac running High Sierra (10.13.2). Interestingly (for me) after dropping some video files on to the drive via the Mac, Windows 10 said there was a fault with the drive and needed to be repaired ... I ignored that and it worked without problems on the laptop. I did read about formatting the drive to Exfat 32 for mac using the mac's disk utility; when I began the process the utility told me it was already Exfat 32, so I stopped right there. It is now currently plugged in to my iMac as a time machine and it's working faultlessly. Really very happy with this drive

Rugged and secure storage- dependable for travel or need to be mobile.
We currently use a WD my cloud in our house for instant access storage on a day to day basis and whilst things are backed up on computers and other physical and cloud storage, I'm still worried about losing precious memories of photos of our children and useful documents such as my old teaching files, my hubby is worried about our iTunes library too with the ongoing effort put into digitalising his music collection . This offers a great solution as part of routine backing up what's the most important things into one place and safe, I would be happy to purchase a second for the iTunes backup and keep this for photos and video. The rugged nature of it means you aren't going to be worried about treating it as gently as one would an iPhone! This makes it ideal for people who need dependable storage but on the go such as working in the field or on location or being able to transport their data on or from business trips.

Very fast, very capable, very portable - very highly recommended
While I wouldn't recommend purposely abusing this external hard drive, it is very well protected against damage from normal impacts. The included software allows both a complete hard disk backup plus has the provision for a synchronizing folder for keeping your backups of frequently used files current. One warning - once you've implemented a full backup (in my case for 68GB) then don't try moving other files on the dive, as the backup takes precedence, and you're only left with about 5% of the bandwidth (think tortoise on sleeping tablets). However, once the backup is complete, you can do other folder backups at a sustained rate of 25MB/s, with bursts to 33MB/s. This means you can transfer data at 40 seconds per GB - very acceptable. Because it's an external drive, you can use it for more than one computer even if they are not on the same network. With 2TB to play with, this should cover you for a very long time, even if you don't erase historic backups. Very highly recommended./
