The death of editing, proof-reading and typesetting...
Burrage writes varied and remarkably memorable tales most of the time. Prolific chap. The tone of stories varies, so you will have exceptionally creepy and 'orrible mixed with slightly sentimental tales and ripping yarns. It is clear he likes to tell a good story, spin a yarn out within a neat old style context. Amongst the stories in this Volume one of the amazon printed paperback series there are some classics and some masterpieces, among the pleasanter fare. Highly recommended for anyone wanting various flavours of approach to the macabre, often with a punchy final resolution. Why only One star? The printing of this book/sheaf of pages held together with glue is woeful in it's capitalist lack of scrutiny in the end product. The typeface is miniscule. The spacing of paragraphs a joke. The occasional leap from one line to another missing yards of white space. Story titles starting on the bottom of a preceding page. Grammatical flaws, occasioned by spelling errors that can only be made by computers. Odd syntax. Choppy use of inverted commas or the lack thereof. In short, no proof-reading, no editing, just someone hacking a text into random bites of strangely spaced lumps of data like so much coal. Yes, the content is what we come for. We read to gather the gist, thence the narrative, ultimately the full book we paid for. The author, if he were to have lived still, would be bereft. As would any craftworker, if a digitised monstrosity is all that gets stitched together. Print it properly, like a book of yore and maybe people will fork out for the £100 of Burrage data you are pimping out.

Poor print size
Good to have so many short stories by this almost forgotten author who some compare to M.R.James ! However - a word of WARNING - the print is VERY small - ridiculously so ! Even my strongest reading glasses where not really enough. I had wished to buy the rest of the series but not now !Reverend John Kelly

some good, some bad
A mixed bag of stories here, some good, some bad. At the end there is a biography of the author, not a short one, but an actual essay. Classic ghost stories here, though some are a bit sentimental.

Excellent
Not sure what the reviewer above was talking about, but these are some of the best ghost stories ever written in the English language.
